Ondo polls panel suspends sitting over threat claim
The Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Akure, the Ondo State capital, has suspended proceedings following allegations of threats to life by the legal team of the Labour Party (LP), the main petitioner in the legal tussle. At the sitting of the tribunal on Monday, Dr. Olumide Ayeni, counsel to the LP and its candidate, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, raised an alarm that some unknown people who he suspected have a sinister motive, had been trailing his movements. The alarm is coming on the heels of the torching of the Ikere (Ondo/Ekiti State border) home of Wole Olanipekun (SAN), Mimiko’s lead counsel and the vandalisation last week of the Akure home of Dr. Tunji Abayomi, the AC lawyer at the tribunal by unidentified people. He alleged that the unknown men had made an attempt to gain entrance into his Akure hotel room during the weekend and that because of the development, he has been living in hiding to protect his life. Ayeni, who came to the Akure High Court venue of the sitting guarded by private security operatives, prayed the tribunal to grant him a temporary adjournment to enable him lodge the complaint with the Police High Command in Abuja. According to him, “since Friday, I have been trailed by unknown people who even attempted to force their way into my hotel room. Because of that, I have been moving from one hotel to the other. As I appear before you today, I have not seen sunlight for the past four days, ” Ayeni statedl.
