Appeal Hearing is Over. Ruling Awaited
The Court of Appeal in Benin, on Monday, concluded hearing of the protracted legal tussle between the Ondo State Governor, Chief Olusegun Agagu, and the candidate of the Labour Party in the April 2007 governorship poll in the state, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko.
The court also reserved its judgment on the case, saying that the date of the judgment would be communicated to the parties accordingly.
The President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Umaru Abdulahi, gave 30 minutes to each of the lead lawyers to the parties in the dispute to present their briefs.
The parties — Agagu, Mimiko, the Peoples Democratic Party, the Independent National Electoral Commission and the Police had argued their briefs in tense court proceedings that lasted three hours and 30 minutes.
After listening to the arguments, Abdullahi commended the lawyers for their industry.
But the appeal was heard by a panel that was slightly different from the one that heard the appeal which sacked former Governor Oserheimen Osunbor from office on November 11, 2008, as Abdullahi announced a reconstitution of the panel on the grounds that one of the justices would ‘soon be going’
The other members of the panel included Justices Amina Adamu-Augie, Ayo Salami, Kumai Akaahs, and Ndukwe Anyanwu.
Agagu was represented by Chief Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), who led Chief Adeniyi Akintola (SAN), Dr. Alex Izinyon (SAN), Mr. Damian Dodo (SAN) and I.A Adedipe (SAN), while a former President of the Nigeria Bar Association, Chief. Wole Olanikpeku (SAN), led Yussuf Ali (SAN), Mr. Femi Falana and others to represent Mimiko.
Alhaji Abdullahi Ibrahim (SAN), Mr. Joseph Daudu (SAN), and J. C. A Idachaba led the legal teams of the Peoples Democratic Party, the Independent National Electoral Commission and the Nigeria Police respectively in the epic legal battle.
Fagbemi, had urged the court to grant the appeal of Agagu against the judgment of the lower tribunal and faulted the way ballot papers purportedly used in the election were put to use by the Election Petitions Tribunal.
But Olanikpekun countered the submissions of Fagbemi, the PDP, the INEC and police and denied Fagbemi’s claims that the manner in which the ballot papers were sorted robbed his client much of his votes.
He argued further that the evidence in the case was even stronger than that of Oshiomhole, on the grounds that it was more compelling. – Punch.

I ACTUALLY BELIEVE THEY SHOT THEMSELVES IN THE FOOT AND DUG THEIR GRAVE DEEPER WITH THEIR ATTACK ON THE TRIBUNAL RULLING. ALL WE PRAY FOR IS THAT GOD HASTENS THE VERDICT DATE FOR AGAGU AND PDP DID NOT PROVE ANYTHING SOLID AT COURT ON THE 19TH. IT DOESNT TAKE A LAWYER TO WORK THIS OUT. @omotaylor my proud sis in the struggle and in the Lord, they came harder at the tribunal in Akure they fell harder and could not able to slaughter the many cows they bought to celebrate the victory they thought would be for them. I am pleased to inform everybody and all the lovers of good governance in Nigeria, particularly Ondo State that things were in our favour at the appeal court yesterday as we have predicted. This time they will fall harder, harder, harder and harder in a free fall than the credit crunch. Thank God the David and the Executive Gov. elect Dr. Mimiko the Iroko of Ondo State whose gubernatorial mandate was by the free will of the people who voted en masse for him and crowned by His grace (God) is about to take over Alagbaka in a shorter length of time while the Era of Agatu the shamed Goliath and his team has finally hit the dead end. Dr. Mimiko has been given all clear by the mighty power from above and his inauguration will come in the not too far and celebrated like that of Obama in Jesus name. However, report has it that the atmosphere in Benin yesterday was fantastic and that the positive verdict in our favour was obviously written on the faces of all the living creatures and even in the sky.

We shall soon all CELEBRATE and PRAISE THE LIVING GOD together.

ICPC probes 18 councils in Ondo 23/1/2009

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) is probing the 18 local government areas in Ondo State.
It has requested for details of all capital projects embarked upon by the councils from 2003 to date.
According to a letter from the ICPC addressed to the Commissioner for Finance, Mr. Tayo Alasoadura, entitled: “Investigation activities: Request for Information/Documents,” ICPC said it was investigating a case of an alleged violation of the ICPC Acts No. 5 of 2000 by some civil/public servants in the state.
The letter has been referred to the state’s Accountant General, Mrs. Folake Ogunnika.
In the letter signed by the Head of Department (HOD) Investigation, Mr. Sotonye L. Wakama, a Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), for the Chairman of the ICPC, Justice Emmanuel Ayoola (rtd), ICPC requested the government to also furnish it with a list of all Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) projects embarked upon by the government from 2003 to date.
It also sought to know who gave the government the authority to deposit its finances/funds in interest-yielding accounts as well as the exact amounts deposited in all such accounts from May 2003 to date.
It also asked for details on the interest accruals.
The ICPC’s summon, according to investigation, was received by the office of the Finance Commissioner on January 15.
The ICPC last year summoned Alasoadura and three permanent secretaries to its office to shed light on the government’s finances totalling N12.5 billion.
The opposition Labour Party (LP), said the development vindicated its position that the government was allegedly diverting public funds into private pockets.
According to LP’s Director of Press, Research and Strategy, Mr. Kolawole Olabisi, allegations that LP governorship candidate Dr. Olusegun Mimiko and the party were responsible for the government’s woes were untrue.
The government had accused Mimiko of masterminding the stoppage of the 50 per cent mobilisation cheque paid for the Owena Dam contract by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC)
The government had alleged that Mimiko, when he was in the government, formulated the policy on the payment of 50 per cent mobilisation fee for contracts.
Olabisi said: “That is nothing but a lie; the extant regulation in Ondo State as regards award of contracts remains the payment of 30 per cent mobilisation fees and that was contained in the Circular issued by Dr. Mimiko in February, 2004 as the Secretary to the State Government (SSG) and that is still the extant law in Ondo State.”
It was interesting watching some Nigerian politicians on tv a few days ago commenting on the inauguration of Obama as the US president. There was a particular fellow, a senator of the federal republic of Nigeria whose name has escaped me; he opined, in response to the trouble-free handing over of power from Bush to Obama, that such a thing could not presently be attained in Nigeria because, in his words, ‘…THESE THINGS TAKE TIME’. I honestly felt like reaching out and giving him a dirty slap, and this is coming from someone who many people would not associate with violence. It takes time for you to do the right thing and act in a civil manner? I am tired and sick of such lazy opinions which I have heard echoed even by so called learned fellows. If someone who is at the heart of legislation, policy-making etc. can utter such drivel, what the hell is he doing in the Senate in the first place? Does the Nigerian state have to be a thousand years old before we start doing things right?
Some things take time, but on the topic of having free and fair elections in Nigeria, of having people with integrity, of having true democracy, of having people with love for the common man; DOES NOT TAKE TIME, BUT A CHANGE IN ATTITUDE. A CONSCIOUS DECISION TO ESCHEW EVIL AND PUT ON THE ARMOUR OF GOD. The big problem is that most of these legislators dont have the fear of God. They are very greedy, not sincere and always make empty stupid noises.
We pray for an Ondo State government populated by people of character, love, integrity, wisdom and the fear of God. I pray for our Governor Dr Mimiko, I pray for all those whom he would choose to work with him. May everyone be exculpated from evil, looting and increasing the yoke of the common man in Jesus name. Why we moved against Agagu 24/1/2009

THE Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has said that it stopped the withdrawal of a N3.8billion cheque issued by the Ondo State Government because the state embarked on spurious award of contracts after the judgment of the Ondo State Election Petitions Tribunal. It also said that payment of 50 per cent mobilisation fees by the state government to some construction companies was a violation of the state’s extant financial regulations. The commission made the clarifications in an affidavit deposed to by one of its officials, Mohammed Modibbo, at a Federal High Court, Abuja. The affidavit was exclusively obtained yesterday by The Nation. The EFCC said the interim findings of its investigation team revealed contract bazaar after the judgment which was in favour of the governorship candidate of the Labour Party, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko. The affidavit reads in part: “That the election of the state governor was nullified by the Ondo State Governorship Election Tribunal and there was serious apprehension in top government circles that the decision of the Election Tribunal would be affirmed by the Appeal Tribunal. “That as a result of the fear that the appeal would be resolved in favour of the opposition, the Ondo State Government embarked upon spurious award of contracts and payment of mobilisation fees contrary to the state’s extant financial regulations.
“That specifically, the Ondo State Government between August and December 2008, awarded many contracts including the contract for the construction of distribution mains for Owena Multi-Purpose Dam Water Supply and the contract for the construction of a new stadium complex in Akure.
“That the contract for the construction of a new stadium complex in Akure was awarded to Messrs CCC Nigeria Limited at a total cost of N3.672billion.
“That the contract for the construction of distribution mains for Owena Multi-Purpose Dam Water Supply was awarded to Messrs SCC Nigeria Limited at a total cost of N14.4billion.
“That due process was religiously followed in the award of the two contracts to SCC ( Nigeria ) Limited and CCC Limited respectively.
“That the State Executive Council under the chairmanship of the Ondo State Governor, contrary to extant financial regulations, approved that 50 per cent of the contract sum should be paid to contractors as mobilisation fees.
“That the Ministry of Finance and the Accountant-General of the state released the sums of N2.636billion to SCC Nigeria Limited and N1.836billion to CCC Limited as part of the 50 per cent mobilisation fees.
“That these sums were approved to be paid by the State Government contrary to extant guidelines on payment of mobilisation fees that such payments shall not exceed 30 per cent of contract sums. A copy of the Ondo State Circular No. CD. 16. Vol. II/277 dated February 2004 on the payment of mobilisation fees is herewith attached as Exhibit EFCC 1.
“That our investigations further revealed that the spate of award of contracts was precipitated by the nullification of the election of the present government by the Election Tribunal.
“That taking into consideration the analysis of the Team and all other circumstances of the case, including the payment of huge sums of money as mobilisation fees, it is in the interim opinion of the Team as well as the 5th Defendant (the Chairman of the EFCC) that there is reasonable likelihood that the offences of money laundering could be committed by officials of the Ondo State Government.
“That investigation is still ongoing and that it is only when investigation is concluded that the 5th Defendant would form an opinion as to whether or not there is a prima facie criminal case against any person to warrant prosecution.”
In a counter-affidavit, the Ondo State Government, through a staff of the Ondo State Water Corporation, Mr. Ola Amure, said the SCC was not paid 50 per cent mobilisation fees.
The counter affidavit reads: “Rather, the total sum paid to the SCC is N2,636,474,720 attached and marked Exhibit C-C1 are copies of the cheques paid to the SCC which is less than 50 per cent of the contract sum.
“That I know as a fact that the generality of the people residing in Ondo State clearly applauded steps taken so far by this administration in the areas of provision of potable water supply.
“Pursuant to Paragraph 9 above, a lot of money, time and resources have been committed to this project such as payment for advertisement and tender fees, etc., and the plaintiffs are not by law authorised to stop the process of awarding the contract as they did not serve the defendants any order of court restraining them from carrying on their lawful duties.”

The above write up is very sad but blame it on the system that has allowed Agagu to operate for nearly two yrs like a legitimate government. It is our system that is opening the door to corruption. Why should a stolen mandate take this long to recover in the first place, why not within 3 month in order to stop greedy and evil people like Agagu? @ T.A, I posted a similar write up here late last year. Many of us are more than tired and sick of this my broad/sista. Pardon me as am not sure whether you are a man or woman. We have been so long hit by the same painful fists you just felt from our very interesting, senseless and shameless Nigerian leaders who happens to be in leadership positions through the power of money to bride their ways or godfathers favouritism. And as long as we Nigerians remain to be swayed by our hearts and stomach, these people will continue to dominate our political arena. When it comes to politics in Nigeria only few leaders can demonstrate learned capabilities. In that field majority of our so called political leaders are educated-illiterates if only there is a word like that.

What exactly do we stand to lose in Nigeria if we work hard for our keep? If we enlighten and educate the masses? Governor Mimiko I am sure has a clear programme. He is a man of vision. He is ready for action. He does not need clogs in his wheel of progress. I can assure you that under Mimiko, you will not be getting free slices of the State cake to stuff or cram in foreign banks. You will only be rewarded commensurate with your hard labour for the Ondo State.
Look at what Mimiko has gone through over the past 21 months.
If you love him and care for him, support all his ideals and let all his goals and objectives be met. If you love Ondo State, DO NOT STEAL THE STATE MONEY in any area you are asked, nominated, called or placed in to work. Do not expect a continuation of Agagu’s style of government which is wholly based on corruption, bribery, kickbacks, looting and wanton awards of contracts mostly for phantom projects.
In our new Ondo State, the love of the common man should be paramount. The upliftment of the state image should be pursued. The environment should be so welcoming.
This is not a rant. My missive could be esoteric, but let me assure you, my missive has a purpose and mission. This is that we should always use the experience of the past 21months as guidance for all our actions in and out of office. I dont know who you are that would be working in the new cabinet but whoever you are and wherever you are, I cover you with the blood of Jesus. I soak you in the Holy Spirit of God; the spirit of truth, love, integrity, dilligence, allegiance, honesty, and righteousness in Jesus name.
Governor Olusegun Mimiko, we the people as always and as ever pray for you again today. We thank God for sparing your life, for sustaining you, for giving you victory. God is not man that he would lie. He has said it and it is done. You are the Mandate Holder in Ondo State. Your Joseph journey (dont know if you also dream) is now coming to its final conclusion where you will start the next phase as second in command to the good “pharoah”. Where you will be in control and rule with the spirit of God. Where all your enemies will lick the dust and kiss the ground you walk on. Where you will govern without any error or fear or terror in Jesus name. The Lord is your Shepherd, and you shall not want. Continue to prophesy, proclaim and pronounce PSALM 23 into your life sir, and as the people pray for you, pray for them all. The tough road ahead will be made easy in Jesus name. Anytime I think of you and my dear Ondo State, I am always reminded of OBAMA and how his journey began, and how his presidency was confirmed by God. He is moving on and you too will move on.

I never regret for having be a part of this forum. God bless the Administrator and the site developer. You make me feel at home that there is hope for the south _west. I have seen a lot of evil by the likes of Agagu and co but I can see a light in the tunnel sobright that gives me hope. I know a change is coming and the Change is now. Please let this forum continue so as to build men and women that will take over the political landscape of this country. I am determined to be one by the grace of GOD. I was going through the allocation given to my Local Goverment (Ogbomosho South, Oyo state) I cant see what it was used for, yet we see people living in poverty and without focus for the morrow because the leaders are not focused.

By the grace of God, you will make it and God will perfect all good pronouncements on and in your life. My dear, no one is great except God. The arm of flesh can fail so yes respect and recognise achievements, but dont ever feel obligated to worship any human achievements. As long as you support and do your best at all times, God will take care of the rest. With God all dreams can be fulfilled. We just pray that whoever God will use for the realisation of these dreams, will find us and know us. Ondo defends planned sale of shares on oil block
LP alleges plot to loot treasury

AS controversy continues to rage over an alleged plan by Ondo State government to sell 70 per cent of its holdings in OPL 241, an oil block located within its territorial waters, which has led to an investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the government has claimed that the planned sale “is in the best interest of the state and its people.”
Opposition elements in the state have alleged that the government was about to be defrauded of a whopping $963 million by some state officials “who, in collaboration with highly-placed individuals in government, intend to pocket the proceeds of an investment by the state.”
A petition written by two Abuja-based lawyers had alleged foul play in the government attempt to sell the holdings on the ground that while a price of $37 million was offered, the block is worth about $1 billion in the open market.
They further alleged that an illegal deal that would defraud the state of as much as $963 million, being the difference between the proposed price and the actual worth of the block, was being perfected by some senior state officials in collaboration with an alleged childhood friend of a senior state functionary whose company is being used as the conduit pipe.
While praying the EFCC to commence investigations into the matter with a view to stopping the sale and prosecuting indicted officials, the petitioners disclosed that the officials intended to carry out the fraud by buying the block at the ridiculous price and selling at the actual price at the end of the deal, thereby robbing the state of a long term profitable investment.
The petitioners also alleged that in order for fraudulent state officials to carry out the deal, signatures of other stakeholders in the block were forged to create the impression that the deal was a board decision supported by all the members.
They further alleged that the state government, because of the percentage of holding, does not have the power to carry out the sale and that the whole issue was being shrouded in the mystery of an under-table deal that would impoverish the state.
The petition was submitted on the heels of a renewed onslaught against the Ondo government by the anti-graft agency, which had stopped the payment of billions of naira by the state to contractors handling what the state called “monumental projects,” majority of which were allegedly awarded to the tune of N65 billion after the July 25 tribunal judgment that sacked the Agagu administration.
But while speaking on the matter to The Guardian yesterday, Chief Bode Sunmonu, the Special Adviser to the State governor, Dr. Olusegun Agagu on Investment Matters, said the decision to carry out the sale was the result of “sound investment judgment that had already brought profit to the state.”
Sunmonu said the state, while procuring the block, did not intend it to be a long-term investment because “we lack the financial capacity and the administrative wherewithal to operate an oil block. We only wanted to buy, sell and make profit for the state through the deal.”
According to the governor’s aide, “sometime in May 2007, the blocks were advertised for sale. Although we bided because we wanted to have shares – particularly because the block is located within our territorial waters – we were not successful.
“We later approached the successful bidder, Oilworld Nigeria Limited and got a 30 per cent holding at the cost of $10.051 million which was later to increase when it was obvious that the company which then controlled 70 per cent holding could not raise the $20.01 million signature bonus without which payment all the initial deposits would be lost.
“It was at this point that we again approached Oilworld to sell 50 per cent of its holdings to us, which we acquired at the cost of $14.051 million last September, bringing our investment to $24.1 million and holdings to 80 per cent.”
The Special Adviser disclosed that the State Executive Council decided to dispose of 70 per cent of its interest and hold on to 10 per cent because of the vagaries of the international oil economy which is fast going down.
He added that the state government’s consultants in the sale, Professional Experts and Energy Company Limited (PEEL) had got a good deal by selling the block for $37 million, but that in line with industry practice, it proposed to either have 20 per cent of the sales fund or five per cent of the block.
Meanwhile, the Labour Party in the state has raised an alarm over the management of funds by the Agagu administration through the accounts of Boards, Commissions and Parastatals in commercial banks in the State
The party urged President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua to probe how funds released from the Federation Accounts to the Agagu-led administration in the state are being spent.
Besides, the party also disclosed that the state government had given all council chairmen in the state the permission to commence, beginning from this week, the sale of government vehicles in their councils to fronts at give away prices.
In a statement, the LP’s Director of Press, Research and Strategy, Mr. Kolawole Olabisi, said following the stoppage of the cheques for payment of some of Agagu’s projects to contractors by the EFCC, the government last week through the Commissioner for Finance, Mr. Tayo Alashoadura directed Chairmen of all the Boards, Commissions and Parastatals to furnish it with details of their accounts in commercial banks in the state with a view to contributing to on-going projects embarked upon by the State government.
But, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Yemi Olowolabi while denying the allegation, berated those accusing the state government of looting the treasury, saying there was no substance in the allegations.

There are two important legal principles in the development of case law and legal justice that underlie jurisprudence, namely, ratio decidendi (the reason for a decision) and stare decisis (let the decision stay). Ratio decidendi focuses on the rationale upon which a decision in a specific case is based; and stare decisis requires that the same decision be applied where facts of cases are the same. Their objective is to ensure consistency in the administration of justice.
The application of these principles is the bedrock of a strong judiciary, which is necessary to sustain a democracy. This is the case in Britain and the United States, where their democracies thrive on the rule of law. For centuries, legal scholars in both countries have distilled case laws and extracted legal precedents to guide the Bar and the Bench, even where the Constitution is very terse, as in the United States; or where there is no written Constitution at all, as in Britain.
One of the problems with the Nigerian judiciary is that the Constitution, the statute, and case law have failed to provide a good guide for the Bar and the Bench. The Nigerian constitution is, at best, a constituted chaos, compounded by Electoral Acts created for each election cycle and the manipulation of the electoral body by the party in power. As a result, election seasons are occasions for anxiety when the rule of law is thwarted by the rule of the street.
Our case law has been equally chaotic. There have been as many varied decisions emanating from our courts as there have been electoral disputes before them, even where the facts of the cases were exactly the same. What makes a just legal system is not the strength of available laws but consistency in their interpretation and implementation. This is precisely where our judicial system has failed us.
Take, for example, the recent decision of the Supreme Court in Atiku Abubakar vs Yar’Adua et al and Buhari vs Yar’Adua et al. The court found that the irregularities associated with the discredited 2007 presidential election were not sufficient to overturn its outcome. Yet, the court failed to provide guidance as to what the threshold should be for non-compliance “with the fundamental principles and the objectives of electoral laws.”
Even where the lower courts were courageous enough to nullify gubernatorial elections on the basis of substantial non-compliance with electoral laws, the Appeal Court either reversed such decisions or ordered partial or complete re-run of the election. Thus, the beneficiaries of the malpractices were either allowed to remain in office or to re-contest as candidates, without penalty for previous offences. It is like allowing a burglar who entered a house through the back door to stay on and continue to enjoy his loot or to try again by entering through the front door, without being punished for the first offence. The burglar is then allowed to own the house and its content after a “successful” second entry!
However, amidst the cacophonous decisions and judicial somersaults came some laudable and courageous decisions in which similar ratio decidendi was determined consistently with the judgements given, because the principle of stare decisis came into play. These justices of courage must be applauded and strengthened.
The cases in point are: Obi vs Ngige; Oshiomhole vs. Osunbor; and Mimiko vs. Agagu. Confronted with Obi vs. Ngige when it was not the vogue to unseat already sworn-in governors, even in the face of overwhelming evidence to do so, the Election Petition Tribunal headed by Justice Garba Nabaruma provided enduring legal justice as against judgment of expediency. The tribunal privileged substantial justice over technicalities and provided clearly defined boundaries as to what evidence is admissible and reliable in electoral matters. Not only was justice done in that case, justice was seen to have been done. And the Appeal Court agreed.
The facts of that case are similar to those of Oshiomhole vs. Osunbor and Mimiko vs. Agagu. Coincidentally, the same justice headed the tribunals that heard Obi vs. Ngige and Mimiko vs. Agagu. The same verdict was reached by using the same ratio decidendi, since the facts are the same, and by favouring substantial justice, despite the lawyers’ recourse to technicalities.
Finally, a commendable pattern was beginning to emerge. Sections 147 (1) and (2) of the Electoral Act were being correctly interpreted and implemented by the courts, namely,
(1) … If the tribunal or court as the case may be, determines that a candidate who was returned as elected was not validly elected on any ground, the tribunal shall nullify the election.
(2) If the tribunal or the court determines that a candidate who was returned as elected was not validly elected on the ground that he did not score the majority of the valid votes cast at the election, the election tribunal or the court as the case may be shall declare as elected the candidate who scored the highest number of valid votes cast at the election.
In all three cases under discussion, the tribunal nullified the election of incumbent governors and declared the petitioners duly elected, (1) after cancelling and deducting the non-valid and unlawful votes from the total votes cast; (2) after determining that the petitioner had the highest number of the votes validly cast; and (3) after ensuring that the petitioner had at least one third of total lawful votes in at least two-thirds of all local governments in the state concerned. The cases share striking similarities in the manner and scale of proven electoral malpractices.
The similarities are particularly striking between Oshiomhole vs. Osunbor and Mimiko vs. Agagu, thus making the precedents laid in Obi vs. Ngige and Oshiomhole vs Osunbor even more cogent. Both of these cases were upheld on appeal, without recourse to a partial or complete re-run of the election.
Moreover, the Appeal Court made it clear that the era of preferring technical over substantial justice was over, thus rejecting, for example, arguments hinged on the “proper” signing of the petition or the joining of certain parties. The court further ruled that charts were admissible in evidence, provided that they were drawn from evidence already examined in court.
These rulings have serious implications for Mimiko vs. Agagu, which came before the Court of Appeal last week. The issues at stake in this case go beyond the parties involved and even beyond Ondo State. They have more to do with repairing our chaotic legal system and instilling confidence in the judiciary. This is why the emergent pattern of consistency needs to be consolidated, the more so when the same Appeal Court justices (except one in each case) are involved in both Oshiomhole vs. Osunbor and Mimiko vs. Agagu.
These honourable justices have made a courageous departure from the madness that was our legal justice system. We need to be reassured that this departure was a design and not an accident. We also need assurance that this break of sunlight behind the cloud signifies the dawn of a new day and not another eclipse.

Beliefs such as the one that led to the detention of this goat belong in the Medieval times, 16th century or thereabout. I think this, sadly, suggests a lack of dynamism in our worldview / Zeitgeist. When will we come out of this tunnel that inhibits rationality and where stupidity, charlatans hold sway?
T.A. when I first read the goat car thief story and the police boss rejoinder, it was too much to handle, and I just started laughing. Not that it was funny but Nigeria and the idiocy that is propagated up to, and outside Nigeria and internationally just makes me want to hide. But then why must I be ashamed for the action of the degenerates and fools in power?
The Nigerian police is so so lacking in inteligence. They are mostly proper VIPs i.e. Vagabonds in Power and instead of being better trained and improved, they sink further and further. Okiro is out there making noises but to no effect. No proper machinations in place to give them a makeover, or give them class and stop them from behaving like people of the pagans and tarzan era. And dont forget the issue of collecting bribes, coercing it out of people and also beating people senseless when they cant get the money. So sad. Where do we start from and where do we go from here?

Ondo mounts CCTV to battle criminals

The Ondo State Government has mounted close circuit cameras in some strategic locations in Akure, the state capital.
The Coordinator of the State Information Technology Development Centre, Mr. Tunji Ariyo, demonstrated the workability of the surveillance system to journalists at a press conference in Akure on Tuesday.
He said that the move would assist law enforcement agencies in carrying out their duties.
Ariyo said that the project would also boost internally generated revenues and curb crime.
He said that the use of the system would check bank raids by bandits because the cameras would assist the police and other law enforcement agencies in their duties.
A RIDDLE FOR YOU ALL MY PEOPLE:
If a thief goes after a thief, what happens in the end?
In a system like ours where 21st century technology is non-existent, using a costly technology like the CCTV will not impact crime in any way. It will be good money thrown down the drains or one of the fat elephant projects Nigerian governments (federal, state, local governments) are noted for. CCTV is all well and good, but CCTV on its own will not apprehend criminals. It will not work if there are no trained policemen to answer the call. We need equiped, committed, and extra police officers on the streets to deal with the incidents that will be spotted by CCTV.
In our system where you can not guarantee 24/7 electricity to light up the cities, it would be better to spend these millions of Naira on proven crime deterrents like more police on the streets. Although CCTV is beneficial in crime prevention, but at our level of technolgical development, its usefulness is doubtful.
If crime prevention is the priority of government, let’s use what our technology can support – community policing. In the United States where I live, every city has its own police, every policeman has its own vehicles with communication gadgets, policemen are well paid, and they are native to the community they police. Let’s try that and see if it will not work. Most importantly, let’s address the root course of crime – joblessness. Improve the economy through job creation and see if crime rate will not drop. Our politicians should stop doing things based on expediency, we should embark on well thought-out programs. In the 70s and early 80s, when the economy was OK, Nigeria was a peaceful place to live. Our politicians know what the problems are, they know what is required to fix it, but they will not do it because they are even worse than the thieves they are trying to catch. The late Fela Anikulapo-Kuti said it all “authority stealing”.
My take on this is that the one that can outwit (brain-wise and physically) the other will come up on top. I can hazard a guess that you had for instance the EFCC chasing Ibori et al!
Digressing a bit, most people who frequent this forum all have one primary overarching desire: How to move our state forward, creating a society where people can live / work in peace and comfort; a society that the indigenes will derive a sense of pride in belonging to, and one that will act as a beacon to others.
There is one thing that I have noticed amongst the general populace however, and it is the propensity to settle for less. We allow those people put in charge of our affairs to hoodwink us, treat us as if they are actually doing us a favour when it’s actually the other way round – they are our servants. For instance, a commissioner professes to spend 50 million naira in constructing a stretch of a mere 2 kilo metre road. He goes about highlighting this as one of his achievements. There are two pivotal points from this: First, the cost does not commensurate with the project on the ground, and in most cases the quality of the road constructed will be non-existent. Second, why should our administrator go on to continue to harp on about this ‘achievement’ of constructing a road? Is that not part of his primary responsibility/remit? After all, he/she is not using his/her own personal money to foot the bill, but our collective money. It is therefore an oxymoronic state of affairs, bitter-sweet.
Elected and non-elected public officials also have this stupid idea that they know best in the initiation and implementation of policy. The latter may be true to a certain extent, but it should really be the domain of the entire populace for the former. Politicians and public officials do not always know best, in fact I can posit that the best ideas come from those not directly involved in politics because they experience reality more than your average public official who is cocooned from the reality of life as a result of his perks in office – air conditioned office, chauffeur round the clock, free accommodation etc. So who are these people and organisations who should be inputting into the affairs of the state? They are people in academia, the media, the market traders and other professions, or guilds of them, interests/pressure groups. All these should be influencing and shaping governmental policies, ideas and implementation.
A serious government desirous of bringing about change will need to take these and other points on board.
On another level, what philosophical basis are our socio-economic policies based on, or put in another way, what political philosophy inform our government’s decision when it comes to allocation and distribution of resources? Are we actually operating a command economy, a free-market system, or a mixed one? At the moment it seems to me that what we are practising is a medley and bastardised form of all the three methods, because you cannot seriously look at the system as it is presently constituted and say it is based on a particular economic ideology. In other words, things are done in a haphazard fashion – anything goes. I believe once this is ironed out, we can them use it as a reference point for whatever we do.
T.A. your input above is so so true and very enlightening. I agree with you on most points. Thanks for your answer to my question. You are right. Thieves in all categories play a game of “winner take it all”; “survival of the fittest”; “do me i do you God no go vex” etc. But one thing is clear, a thief who goes after another thief is bound to be felled by the same sword as the thief he or she goes after. Actually I did not have EFCC and Ibori in mind. I dont have enough information to call EFCC a thief, albeit Ibori is one. I actually meant Agagu and his CCTV to catch criminals gymmick for we all know he is the master criminal in our Ondo State, and your analogy above partly points to this.
You are right in saying that many people will rather settle for less. They will sing all sorts of praises to and about the same people that are sucking their blood dry like leeches. But we are rather looking forwards to an Ondo State of progressive, hardworking, brainy and fortrighh people under Governor Olusegun Mimiko. An Ondo State where for a change, like Calabar under Donald Duke and Lagos under Fashola, the Governor on sit would know best and be sorrounded by people who know better. This would be in practice and not in theory only.
Ondo State should wake up to the truth. Our lot in life needs a drastic change for the better. Things are not ok at all the way they presently are. Yes it is true that present Nigerian political philosophy falls flat and has so many shortcomings. But a Governor with insight and foresight would be able to turn things around thereby ensuring the right ideologies, workable ideologies and success driven ideologies in government. I pray that Ondo State will be given the chance to actualise this under Governor Olusegun Mimiko. Never we say die. The die is cast. We are moving higher to our next level, and this will become reality.

VERY TRUE. The appointed time is at hand. We want this to become reality rather than wants and needs. We definitely desire CHANGE. WE CAN DO IT. All that needs done is to allow the input of the people in government. A governor with LISTENING EARS, in addition to a CARING HEART, will position himself close to the people. My question is, Can and Mimiko do this? I believe, in fact I am sure he could and will. Why, the man Mimiko is a man of the people with an open door, but no nonsense policy. A humble God fearing and unasuming man, but very very sensible. This is the right qualification true democratic governance.
We pray that the awaited VERDICT, which we know will be to ratify the Truth that Nabaruma upheld, will soon be out. I was hoping it would be Friday but now I believe it could be sometime early next week. No problem, for God is in control and the cries of the people have been heard by God and our prayers will be answered.

I feel if a thief goes after a thief, they will both meet at a round table to fashion ways in which they can perfect their operations. Bird of the same feather flock together. All you should expect is a fomidable team that will grom to be a problem to the environment. All what the CCTV is to do is to let the people say “AGAGU IS WORKING” they are all just looking for ways to make sure all what have been stolen from the cofers of the state is balanced. I feel also when a thief also meet a thief they will all watch each others back because they will all be afried of each other of who will back stab one another first. Which might lead to a game plan of assasination so as the other not to reaveal secrets of their past events. One more thing I will add is the issue of retraining or raising the educational qualification and standard of the Nigerian Police. When we talk or hear or read about the Nigerian police, it is always a very sorry, sad, despicable or annoying thing we hear about them e.g. the “goat” car stealer lol!. Are we dealing with Babarians from the stone age in the Nigerian police?

People who know Agagu close up are likening him to the very Maradona, unstable in parts, thinks he is smart, when he is not and believes his gift of the garb can sway any hearer. @Omo Taylor. I am a silent reader of your comments both on this forum and other blogs. I am amazed by your tenacity and commitment to your beliefs. I am however, disappointed that like some other talented and passionate Nigerians, you are living outside of the country. Your kind of person with strong commitment to ideals and passion for good governance should be the leading lights in our political environment. Unfortunately, Nigeria because of lack of planning for the future of the country continue to lose her best and brightest to other countries. This is a sad story indeed. The country was not like this when I was growing up. We have completely lost our moral values.
One issue that I really would love to comment on, but choose not to most times, because it has been emotionally frustrating for me, is the yet to be concluded litigation over the gubernatorial election in Ondo State almost two years after the election. You have exhibited an uncommon belief that justice will be served in the case even when there was no reason to be hopeful. I really salute your audacity. When the story of this struggle will be told, you will definitely be an heroine. I really commend your efforts. You are a woman of uncommon foresight. I doff my hat for you.
RE: Ondo State CCTV
Occasionally I do wonder how some leaders think. Anyone that has been to Akure, or Ondo state would know how silly the idea of CCTV is as been planed by Agagu administration.
Must he copy what Fashola is doing in Lagos? Lagos state is a metropolis of 18 million people locked in a land mass that is a 1/4 of Ondo state. There is some justification for having CCTV in Lagos, even at that, Fashola is not implementing his idea with 100% public funds.
Has Agagu gone mad? If he hasn’t, he must be right on the verge of insanity!

By the way, I hereby place my integrity at stake if judgement does not come on or before Thursday the 5th of Feb. You faithfuls should start rejoicing, yes I know you will say, `do not count your chicken before the eggs are hatched` but be reminded that the egg is already hatched and you just have to see the chicken. Guess you all know what I mean but if you don`t, just give couple of more days.
Where ever you may be, you will still be needed in Ondo State for your ideas via whatever means/route necessary; we must not look for what our beloved Ondo State can do for US but what we must do for the good people of Ondo State, therefore, if you have the means, you must start planning how to help somebody in the State not necessarily your Clansman, though they say `charity begins at home` but let this home be ONDO STATE, if you have means of creating employment, start thinking about how to do that , and if you must offer your free service(s) in what ever discipline you may be, start permutating how that will work out.

It is apt, without sounding over the top, that what has obtained in our state and indeed across the Nigerian nation can justifiably be likened to a Hobbesian state of nature, where literally life is nasty, brutish and short.
Our public officials have made governance look like rocket science, an almost unattainable feat. It sometimes amazes me that some people have the opportunity to SERVE their people but then go on to desecrate and abuse this noble opportunity.
You employ someone in your business and all he/she does is run your business to the ground and we, the beneficiaries of public service, end up doing nothing. E go better one day! It indeed may one day, but as John Maynard keynes said, ‘…in the long run we are all dead’. So my main interest is here and now. Our government hitherto is bankrupt. Just because the government is still running does not mean it is not bankrupt. There is a palpable void in this entire scenario, and it is the absence of an enlightened situation vis-à-vis the relationship and rights that obtain between the governed and public officials. Public officials are our servants, not our overlords. What does your servant do when he/she fails to do your bidding, which is actively to work towards achieving a positive outcome? You kick him/her out and make him look even worse than a leper. Apologies to those who are unfortunately saddled with this ailment.
If anybody is of the notion that we cannot run a decent society befitting of human worth in this day and age because Nigeria is only 48 years old, or that our colonial master, England, has been in existence for 400 years or thereabout and that this is why they are able to manage things relatively better than us, then people with such throwback mentality should steer clear of public service.
I am making a plea on behalf of like-minded citizens of the state that a forum such as this be kept opened for the ordinary man and woman in the street to vent their anger when public servants go off the rail, which is sadly 95% of the tie presently. I want to be able to speak to the legislator representing me at the local legislature and at Abuja to give an account of his/her stewardship, to accost my local government official responsible for my child education why the quality of education the child is getting is abysmal. We the general populace are the linchpin in a democracy and a channel must therefore be provided for our views to be aired and effectively acted upon.

The Federal High Court, Benin, presided over by Justice Chukwura Nnamani, on Tuesday, restrained 15 banks from honouring cheques or accepting any advise and instructions on behalf of Ondo State government, in respect of any contract.
The ex-parte order was sequel to the suit filed by Honourable Olawale Ojo James, Mr Raymond Mayowa Akadiri and Mr Ibikunle Peters, joining the state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and its Chairman, Mrs Farida Waziri.
The order also stopped the administration of Governor Olusegun Agagu from awarding new contracts, pending determination of the Motion on Notice, the hearing of which had been fixed for February 6, 2009.
Reacting to the order at a news briefing, Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Isaac Kekemeke, the Attorney General, Yemi Alao and the Commissioner for Information, Orientation and Mobilisation, Chief Eddy Olafeso, said the “net effect of this order is to completely suspend, as it were, the legitimate and constitutional government of Ondo State and foist anarchy and chaos on the state.”
Kekemeke said government was greatly surprised that a judicial officer of Honourable Justice Nnamani’s stature could grant such a sweeping ex parte order without hearing the defendants, particularly the state government that will be adversely affected by the order.
He said this is because “the subject matter of the suit, i.e. award of contract for road, water and allied projects as well as services – is within Ondo State.”
He said it was wrong for the Benin court to adjudicate on the matter, since there is a Federal High Court of similar jurisdiction in Akure, the state capital.
“Therefore, the state government strongly believes that for Nnanami to grant an ex parte order of this magnitude to persons who have no stake in the affairs of the state is a clear indication of gross abuse of the sacred powers of the honourable court, moreso as all the superior courts of this country have always frowned at such attitude,” he said.
In its reaction, the Labour Party, described govt reaction to the judgment as the cry of a loser.
According to its Director of Press, Kolawole Olabisi, the cry is another pre-emptive measure by Agagu and his men to vilify the judiciary should he lose at the Appeal Court just like he did when he lost at the lower Tribunal in Akure and went about abusing the judiciary in the media.

Why on earth do some people become leaders and their names are embossed in gold frame and tucked away in the innermost parts of the minds of people to cherish for ever. And why would some seek leadership to cause those they lead pains that can never be erased. Today, and forever to come, the names of Obafemi Awolowo, muritala Mohammed, and Mohammed buhari and olusegun obasanjo evoke different emotions on the majority of the people of Nigeria.
At the touch tone of financial prudence, infrastructural development and honest leadership, the name Obafemi Awolowo brings smile to the faces of the people, while the name of Muritala Mohammed and Mohammed buhari receive memory of discipline, courage and honesty, Olusegun Obasanjo’s unsettles the tummy for his ingenuity in using the law to steal, to deceive and to inflict maximum hardship on the people.
They are all leaders; they all directed the affairs of the people at one time or the other. However, they all evoke different emotions in people. Just like Olusegun Kokumo Agagu the maximum governor now running riot with the finances of Ondo state, before Agagu became deputy governor of Ondo state early in 90’s.he was just an ordinary teacher at the University of Ibadan.

I actually read your message on my hospital bed though I could not give a response from there. Yes I live outside Nigeria but guess what, I am never too far from my country and especially my native town and Ondo State. God will place the right people in the right places and on behalf of THE COMMON MAN. I identify with the masses all the time, and will fight tooth and nail to ensure that their lot, our lot improves in life. For every lost soul saved I am deeply grateful to God. Dont get me wrong, the masses i.e. the common man can sometimes be hard to fight for especially when things go awry and they misunderstand you; but this is where dilligence and commitment comes in. Nothing good in life comes that easy. Oh our Governor His Excellency Dr Mimiko can attest to this. We all see how hard and long the battle at hand has been on for. First, election malpractice is not usually the expected, but unfortunately in Nigeria it became more of the norm because of a brute in power by name Aremu who decided that PDP should be the only and overall governing party in Nigeria. NOT DEMOCRACY but AUTOCRACY. We thank God that this will and has changed. When you sow seeds of corruption and deceit, what fruits would you expect? Any person whose election is in dispute should not be sworn in until this has been resolved, even if there will be an interim government in place.
Agagu was not sworn in but IMPOSED upon Ondo State in a brutish intimidating manner, yes I remember supported by Ehindero Sunday and his police power. We shall remember that in Ondo State for a long time to come. Not that we havent or will not forgive but we have to guide against evil reoccurences in Nigeria in the future. In fact to butress the point and choice of answer, Agagu and his billion naira squandamanias proves that a corrupt leader in power will only spell doom for the people.
What I ask, are we doing to avoid a repition of shame, dishonour and helluvah in Nigerian elections in 2011? We talk more, act less and complain all the way. ” World Leaders Congratulate Ghana on Democratic Election

World leaders are congratulating Ghana on successful democratic elections that saw the opposition candidate defeat his ruling-party rival by fewer than 41,000 votes.

U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon congratulated all of Ghana’s candidates, the electoral commission and Ghanaian voters for the peaceful and orderly resolution of last month’s elections, hailing it as a democratic achievement.
President-elect John Atta-Mills withstood two rounds of voting and a special election in a single constituency last Friday to claim just more than 50 percent of the vote, narrowly edging ruling-party rival Nana Akufo-Addo.
Mr. Atta-Mills takes power Wednesday when President John Kufuor steps down after eight years in power.
British Prime Minister Gordon Brown telephoned the president-elect to congratulate him on his victory.
French President Nicolas Sarkozy said that under Mr. Atta-Mills’ leadership, he is convinced that Ghana will “make more progress, respecting the institutions and liberties as the entire international community is watching.”
Many in Africa offered their own praise for the peaceful nature of the vote and the inclusiveness promised by the president-elect.

Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga said Mr. Atta-Mills’ victory and the conduct of the people of Ghana “provides a rare example of democracy at work in Africa.”
South African President Kgalema Motlanthe said the Ghanaian people have shown their appreciation for democracy in an election that bears testimony to respect for good governance in Africa.
That is particularly striking given last month’s military coup in Guinea and August’s overthrow of the first freely-elected leader in Mauritania.
S. Tarnue Sherman is Chairman of the Political Science Department at the University of Liberia. He said Ghana is a torchbearer for African democracy.
“If you watch the reaction to the recent coup in Guinea, you will find out that Africans are not too much receptive to military take-over again. People are saying, look, the solution to democracy is not taking up arms. Let us go through the ballot. And this is what is happening now today, which we saw in Ghana,” he said.
Professor Sherman said Ghana’s role as the birthplace of the Pan-African movement and its continuing commitment to democracy is a source of pride for all Africans.
“This shows to the world that democracy can also flourish in Africa, especially in West Africa where you have so many military coups and things. So Ghana has a special place in West Africa and Africa at large,” said Sherman.
Declaring victory Saturday, Ghana’s 64-year-old president-elect said it is time to unite the country after a hard-fought election and promised those who did not support him that they would face no recriminations.
“I want to assure all Ghanaians that I will be president for all. There will be no discrimination,” he said.
Mr. Atta-Mills not only captured the presidency, but led his National Democratic Congress party to big gains in Ghana’s parliament, winning 114 of the 228 seats.
NIGERIA WHEN DO WE START THINKING RIGHT?
My people all is not lost in Nigeria and there is HOPE for
democracy and the common man. If Ghana can do it then Nigeria can, for I remember in the mid to late 70s when Ghana had it so bad that the “beautidful ones were not yet born”. But now in Ghana the beautiful ones are being born daily. I pray in Nigeria that very soon, and especially in Ondo State that the beautiful ones would be borne. Only one thing I am not sure of is – DO WE NEED A NAIJA RAWLINGS FOR THINGS TO BE OK?
I still preach peace but also will preach that ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.

I agree with Lekan (Akure) that only a handful of Nigerians since our independence merit being called leaders. If you put them on the leadership scale 95% of the people who have ruled Nigeria from local to federal level does not merit being called leaders.
They do not have a clear vision of where they are going, as well as a firm grasp of what success looks like and how to achieve it. Compare Fasola to Agagu or to Oni, the governor of Ekiti – visionless leaders. They got into power through hook or crook and they don’t know what to do with it.
They lack integrity. Their dealings with the people are never honest. How do you describe our current president who challenged his critics who said he was not physically fit during the campaign to a round of a game of squash, only for us to find out now that he is probably suffering from ?chronic renal problem or the professor of Economics and the Governor of our Central Bank telling Nigerians in the middle of a world-wide economc meltdown that the Nigerian economy is immune to recession. The truth is now here with us.
Nigerian leaders are not dedicated to the cause of the common man in the country, that is why they steal with impunity.
We pray in Ondo-state post-Agagu that God should give us a visionary leader that has integrity and will be dedicated to the cause of the majority, not a clannish leader like Agagu. We pray for a leader that will be magnanimous, humble, and open. A leader that is creative, fair, assertive, and with good sense of humor. We look forward to seeing the realization of these attributes in the incoming admnistration of Dr. Olusegun Mimiko.

Wow, the people are going to get very very lucky for daily now we find that people who have the love of the common man at heart are increasing daily and willing to openly declare their love and support. This is indeed a good sign and will encourage even the skeptical ones. One thing that comes out clear is that although these wreckless and uncaring leaders think they are fooling the people, the people are not fooled at all. Instead the so called leaders are so wrapped up in their warped thinking that they never look inward and do a proper self test.
Who believed Yaradua when he said he was fit? NO ONE BUT WE KEPT MUTE.
Who believed Soludo when he said Naira was immune to recession or economic depression? Not many for it actually sounded like foolish talk especially when he went on to say the Naira was knowingly devalued for good reasons. Haba, the people are not foolish now.
Who would believe that Yaradua is fit to run a second term as president when his first term is still in a state of unconsciousness? Even a nursery school child can tell you that he or she is aware of Yaradua’s comatose.
These visionless no do gooders are yet to realise that the PEOPLE ARE NOT STUPID. Things are changing and the only ones not changing are them (the so called leaders).

Good news – Nigeria will change, for the wind of change is blowing. And then instead of people battling it out to see who could chop the most, quench the most, and kill the most, other leaders will feel so disgraced that they would have no choice but to change. This is the Nigeria that you and I dream and wish for. Our dream would become reality. God will hearken to our cries. The people will be happy. They will be cared for, and I pray that they will find contentment, for what is the point fighting on behalf of the people if they themselves are not ready to change for the better?

We have waited long enough and God has granted us the fortitude and forbearance to carry on without losing hope for one minute or losing focus. One thing is sure, each passing day draws us closer to the declaration of the ONE TRUTH WE ALL KNOW IN ONDO STATE. MIMIKO IS THE ELECTED GOVERNOR OF ONDO STATE. MIMIKO IS THE MANDATE HOLDER. MIMIKO IS THE GOVERNOR SO CHEATED TILL TODAY. MIMIKO IS THE MAN OF GODLY PATIENCE THAT WOULD RATHER SEEK THE PATH OF PEACE AND JUSTICE. MIMIKO IS THE MAN OF VISION THAT WE ARE ALL WAITING FOR TO START A SERIOUS RESTORATION PROCESS IN ONDO STATE. Mark these words and in 12 months time, we will all have cause to revisit Ondo State governance and EVALUATE THE ACHIEVEMENT OF DR OLUSEGUN MIMIKO.
I am not worried one inch for I know 100% that God will doubly ratify as He is blessing NABARUMA for giving a verdict of truth and integrity. ABDULLAHI is only going to say what God knows is the truth. We people know it, but because of the way Nigerian politics had gone in the past, some evil people believe that they can cheat, lie, steal and get away with it. But God has changed the evil status quo. The people who cry enough is enough will now get the much needed saving from evil governance and Democracy will be the rule of the day.
For those who are still disillusioned with Nigerian Politics and Politicians in general, as much as we understand and dont blame you, one thing we now beg is this, look at the achievements of some few governors e.g. Fashola and Donald Duke and pray, hope and believe that more of such people with vision and integrity will enter into politics. Put that disbelief away (even if temporarily) and give Governor Elect Olusegun Mimiko a vote of confidence, support him, work with him and between 12 – 18 months from now , TELL HIM AND THE WHOLE OF NIGERIA what you have found him to be.
Omotaylor is not ranting. Omotaylor has this God given spirit that tells what people are. It is called Intuition, discernment and Trust. I trust Olusegun Mimiko, I have studied his rise to fame and power, and one thing that binds his whole journey to date, that many people know about is GENUINE LOVE FOR THE GENERALITY OF THE PEOPLE. in addition to humility, dilligence and checkable achievement records, Mimiko is being propelled by God to be a help to the people.
Why did Obama shatter all boundaries? Why did Winston Churchill succeed where others failed? Why did Nelson Mandela survive in Prison and become president of South Africa albeit decades after he started the freedom fight? Why did Nelson Mandela even started the fight against apartheid? Our ways are not the ways of God. God knows why he chose Moses, Joseph, Joshua, Daniel, Deborah, Esther, Modecai, John the Baptist and greatest of all OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST to play their particular roles in the life of mankind (Israel at large). And God knows why he has touched Dr Olusegun Mimiko’s heart and called him to do SOMETHING GOOD AND GREAT in the lives of Ondo state people.
A revolution has since started. Pen and paper revolution, not bloodshed, vandalism, looting and wanton destruction. A revolution has started, this is one of expanding the intellect and minds of the people, so that they would uphold the truth, freedom and justice. A new beginning we ask, and a new beginning we shall get. What we now do with it will go a long way.
God loves us and has given us this chance to prove to the whole world that Ondo State will prosper, develop and pioneer world class achievements. Let us all work together to make this happen. Hubert Ogunde years ago sang “Yoruba Ronu”, it is time for YORUBA to RONU for in Nigeria Hausas stick together and support their clan, Ibos do the same, but Yoruba will allow the seed of discord to tear us apart. No more of this please. It is not about individuals, it is not about the affluent and powerful, but IT IS ABOUT THE ORDINARY PEOPLE who suffer, vote, pay taxes, support and work without any REWARD. When Saul the King failed the people, God sent Samuel to annoint David king. It took time but David was crowned King and enjoyed total support (all those against him were wiped out by God). The Bible is life and what happened in Biblical stories are happening in planet earth and will be so forever.
“King” Agagu aka Saul is not fit to continue rulling the people. He is too evil, too corrupt and too serpentine. God has rejected him, you cannot bless whom God has cursed.
“King” Mimiko aka David the beloved of God has been chosen and annointed by God. Nabaruma is the Samuel that did the annointing. HE WILL BE CROWNED KING AND ALL HIS ENEMIES WILL LICK THE DUST. He will successfully govern Ondo State. The people will be happy, the land will know peace and plenty and love and joy will radiate. This is the handwork of God and it will be marvelous in our sight. That said, we have been so Godly patient for nearly 22 months, in order to make sure that this injustice called Politics in Nigeria is righted. Faith in Nigerian politics must be restored. People who go out to vote should have confidence that their votes would be meaningful and that they are reckoned with in choosing a leader of their choice. It is very important that 2011 should not be a repeat of the SHAME ON NIGERIA 2007 elections. I dont hear of what is being done to make things right. I hear all of us, including me talking, writing, praying and wishing that there will be a change and that Nigerian elections will hitherto be a democratic and honest one.
Now I ask again, what should we as the people do to make the rulers or leaders do somethingabout election 2011? PDP and politics of “do or die” must have taught us something. Look at the products of “do or die politics”. Yaradua the most inconsequential and most ineffective President that ever presided in Nigeria. Agagu the most corrupt, most selfish, most trickish governor in Nigeria to date. What would have happened if like Mimiko in Ondo state, Fashola was cheated out of office? See what Lagos would have lost. This is what Ondo State is losing while we await the return of our stolen Mandate. This in essence is the reason we are begging and pleading that this Appeal Verdict is released ASAP.
Ondo State doesnt deserve the agonising wait. Ondo State doesnt deserve the looting of state treasury, the pain and suffering inflicted on the people, and the inept state of things in all departments of the state. We want change. We need the people’s sufferings to be aleviated. WE WANT AGAGU OUT NOW AND FOREVER. We have had enough and we wont tolerate gross abuse of all the people in Ondo State any longer.

Mimiko is a man of God, a chosen, elected and annointed replacement for an evil governor called Agagu. Mimiko is a household name, at home and abroad. The name Mimiko is synonymous to JOY, HOPE, FAITH, PROGRESS, KINDNESS, VISION, GROWTH, IMPROVEMENT, SAFETY, LOVE AND GODLINESS. These words are reassuring and better still truthfully rewarding. Even the young and youths at home and in the Diaspora would tell you that they hear and know Mimiko to be a man that reminds them of Obama. The people did the right thing. They did not ask for Barrabas. They did not ask for the crucifixion of Jesus a second time. They know from Biblical accounts what the outcome of choosing Barrabas instead of Jesus would be. Historical records in Ondo State for thousands of years to come will refer to election 2007 and the aftermath as it affects the people of Ondo State. We shall use this as a case study when teaching all our young ones who will be leaders of tomorrow. When are we going to learn, especially we Yorubas? Our dear departed father Papa Obafemi Awolowo had a message of truth vision and hope, but was rejected. Rejected by people who allowed others to use them. Now they have decided to declare to Nigeria that Papa Awolowo was right in his assertions. Well in the meantime, what happened to Nigeria and especially to the Yoruba race. Maybe it is time we discard the name YORUBA. It is not our real name. All Yoruba names have meaning. Can someone tell me the meaning of ‘Yoruba’? Hausas gave us the name “DAN BANZA YORUBAWA”. Our God chosen name is “OMOLUWABI” “OMOODUWA”. When we bear this name instead of Yoruba, then “Oruko rere a mo wa lara (our good name will make a difference in our lot in life).
My dear OMOLUWABI Ondo State brethren, God wants to make a change in our lot in life. God wants to do something good in our lives. Let us give God the praise and glory by accepting God’s gift of life. Let us shun evil, abstain from deception and jealousy, and let us become our brother’s keepers. Let us start with rallying round Governor Olusegun Mimiko and move Ondo State forward. Arent we all fed up with our sorry plight and shameful state of living? Do we want change, progress and happiness? Do we want better life for our children? Do we want good governance, education and all social amenities in place? God wants this for us, let us claim this for ourselves.

Opposition won’t enjoy money raised by Agagu, says commissioner

AN insight into why the Ondo State government decided to embark on massive award of what it termed “monumental projects” just after the verdict of the election petition tribunal voiding Olusegun Agagu’s election was given yesterday as the Commissioner for Finance, Tayo Alasoadura, said: “We cannot allow the opposition to spend our hard-earned resources”.
The commissioner, at a press conference to present a breakdown of the 2009 budget, said the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)-led state government had done enough financial engineering to raise the money in the state coffers and “we will not fold our arms and watch some people expend the money on frivolities”.
On July 25, 2008, the five-man Garba Nabaruma-led election petition tribunal unanimously nullified the declaration of Agagu as winner of the 2007 governorship election and declared that the petitioner and Labour Party (LP) candidate, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, was duly elected while citing several irregularities that characterised the poll.
But in what the state government earlier said was as a result of long-term planning and coincidental execution of ventures, the government began the award of contracts for several development projects totalling about N65 billion within four-month period.
The rain of contracts that had put the state under the searchlights of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) also curiously involved the payment of an unprecedented 50 per cent mobilisation fees to contractors.
Accusing the opposition LP of “trying to reap where it did not sow”, Alasoadura said the aim of the opposition “if they come on board is to empty the state treasury within a very short period of time”.
The commissioner, who said the anti-graft commission had given the state a clean bill of health after finding out that all the contracts were duly awarded, also disclosed that an ex parte order obtained by some persons from a Federal High Court in Benin, Edo State capital, stopping the state from paying money to contractors, has been vacated.
According to him, “the EFCC officials came and saw our books but they did not see anything incriminating. We have a duty to award contracts and we are doing it. We are a government that is prudent and wary of our due process mechanism”.
Ms. Omotaylor, you do not need to rain curses on them. In words and in deed they have already cursed themselves. If they find it difficult to cover their track while they are in power and EFCC is after them and even stopping their cheque from being honored, I wonder where they will run to when they are removed from office. What they thought they have covered will soon be laid bare for everybody to see. The wind will soon blow and the “below” of the chick will be open for everybody to see.
It’s saddening that Obasanjo and his do or die politics imposed on us in Ondo-State, shameless, greedy politicians like Agagu and Alasoadura who could not distinguish between public and private funds.
I pray at this time that God should give us “men”. Men who will bring back the vision of good leaders like Chief Obafemi Awolowo. Men who will redeem these years of locust for us……………particularly in Ondo State.
Amen to your prayers. God has given us one such man already and his name is RAHMAN OLUSEGUN MIMIKO and I am sure of this. May God provide other such men and women of integrity, conscience and clout for this is what Ondo State desperatley needs at these evil times. Court restrains Ondo govt from selling oil block

A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos, has restrained Ondo State government from selling its interest in an oil block, Oil Prospecting Licence (OPL 241). Ondo State’s interest in OPL 241 is held by Owena Oil and Gas Limited, owned by the state and OPL 241 is one of the two oil blocks in which Owena Oil co-invested with a private firm, Integrated Mineral Development Company Limited (IMDCL).
Justice Mojisola Olatoregun-Ishola, granted the order, following an ex-parte application filed by IMDCL, which alleged malpractices on the part of the state government.
The applicant had asked the court for an order of mareva injunction, restraining Ondo State government from selling or dealing in any manner howsoever with Owena Oil and Gas’s interests in Oil Block OPL 241 pending the determination of the suit”.
The court in its ruling, granted the order in the interim, and directed that it should subsist pending the determination of a motion on notice filed by the plaintiff. The court further directed the plaintiff to serve the said motion on all parties and undertake to pay damages should it turn out that the order ought not to have been made and further hearing in the matter was adjourned till tomorrow.
Integrated Oil, in an affidavit in support of the motion, had averred that the suit sequel to information it got, that the state was taking further step to sell Owena Oil’s interest in OPL 241, without recourse to the company’s legally constituted board.
The company further averred that “Ondo State Government had contracted a firm, Professional Experts and Energy Company Limited (PEEFCO) to facilitate the sale of Owena Oil’s state in OPL 241 for the sum of $37million and that its search at the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) revealed that the said PEECO is allegedly owned by one Chief Femi Akinmade, ‘one of the persons illegally appointed by the state as a Director of Owena Oil, and his family members.”
Intergrated Oil had last year sued the state and four others over allegation that Ondo state government unilaterally reconstituted Owena Oil’s board, changed its representatives on the said board and allotted shares to them without the plaintiff’s knowledge and consent.
In addition, Guaranty Petroleum limited, Associated Offshore Oil limited, Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) and Owena Oil & Gas limited are also defendants in the suit
The plaintiff want the court to among others, declare that all steps taken by the Ondo state and Guarantee Petroleum to sell or deal in the Owena Oil’s 100 per cent interest in another oil block – OPL 95 without its (palintiff’s) consent is illegal.

Olorogun Eddy Olafeso is the Ondo State Commissioner for Information. In this encounter with Deputy Political Editor, EMMANUEL OLADESU, he reacts to a petition by Victory and Rose Associates to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over allegations of fraud and divesting of over 70 per cent shareholding in the Owena Oil and Gas Limited.
What is your reaction to the allegation that the state government has sold its shares in Owena Oil and Gas?
What manner of country are we? Must we come up with anything just because we want to fight the government in power? You see, the problem with Dr. Agagu is that he is too plain. He does not play politics with issues and works like tomorrow will not come. And that is why these people are concocting all manners of lies to fight and probably distract the government. But those are defeatist moves that would not take them anywhere. Having understood that the Appeal may not go their way, they are confined to designing a new strategy which has failed abnitio. Otherwise, you’d want to ask: why now that we are in Appeal?
Are you saying the petition is baseless?
What originally comes to mind is that this is the handiwork of a few people who are extremely disingenuous and do not have the interest of Ondo State at heart. They are self-seeking individuals who are just hell bent on destroying the state
What we intend to highlight here and to let you know is the fact that Ondo State is a part owner of OPL 241. Ondo State has cumulatively, from 2007 when we lost the bid to Oil World, been able to acquire the interest of 80 percent equity, amounting to $24 million in OPL 241. And throughout this period, there has never been a time when all the things said to have been done were not done on the table where everybody could see.
Ondo State has acquired additional 50 per cent of OPL 241 when oil prices were over and hovering around $140 per barrel. As at today, it is below $40 dollars. Ordinarily, the investment is for Ondo State to make money; create wealth for the people and be able to develop the state industrially. In the beginning, the objective was for Ondo State to have access to gas which could power the fertilizer project which was at that time being put together.
So, we went into this and we invited a consultant, PEECO who was there at the beginning in negotiating all the equity shares and the payment for the 80 percent. Now, there is an offer and not an outright sale of 37 million dollars. If you spent less than 24 million dollars to acquire 80 per cent and you are selling 70 per cent of that shares for $37 million, to me, that is something that should be celebrated.
But it is said that there is no smoke without fire…
These are avalanche of lies that Victory and Rose Associates put together here through their sponsor, Integrated Mineral Development Limited. I believe this is the handiwork of a well known crook in Ondo State. So, who collected about N184 million worth of project in Ondo State and never for one day executed one. He has been on the run for a long time and he claims that he owns 30 percent of equity shares in Owena Oil and Gas Limited.
I think at this juncture, it is necessary for Victory and Rose to invite this man to show evidence of ownership of the shares acquired in terms of involvement in the transaction. Do you just own shares in vacuum without you paying for it? These people have no kobo invested into Owena Oil and Gas. So, they have no right to claim.
Why are you reading political undertones to the allegations?
It is very spurious and vexatious for them to come out now and begin to discredit Ondo State government over OPL 241. It is not only a deliberate attempt to undermine the government of Ondo, but also a deliberate attempt to embarrass the people of Ondo State. And why this moment when our case is at the Appeal Court, having known clearly that this is sponsored by the opposition to discredit government, knowing fully well that they are on their way out of the contrivance and what I can call their usual way of using foul means to get things done like they did at the tribunal in Ondo State.
But they can find other means by which they can fight government. This will not stand; it cannot stand because it is all pure lies and if it is true like they claim, that this oil thing is billion dollars in worth, we want them to provide and send the cheque to Ondo State government, we’ll be glad to hand-over the 80 per cent that belongs to Ondo State government to them. But I believe the system should be able to punish people who come around EFCC and yarn stories that they know is deliberate falsehood and blackmail so that people can be debarred from constantly harassing governments that are doing very well for their people.
If they know that this thing is worth $40 million today, they should please kindly send the cheque to Ondo State and the license will be theirs.
So, enough of this nonsense; enough of trying to blackmail government and we must, as Nigerians, continue to look at what is happening in other parts of the world and try as much as possible to collectively build our nation.

‘Agagu’s govt is profligate’ 12/2/2009
Ranti Akerele is the Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party (LP) in Ondo State. He was the Chief Protocol Officer (CPO) during Adebayo Adefarati’s era. Akerele also served in the same capacity in the early days of the Agagu administration. He spoke with DAMISI OJO on some burning issues in the state.
THE alleged sale of oil blocs belonging to Ondo State is generating controversy. What is your reaction to this development?
On the issue of oil blocs, it has become the usual practice of the Agagu government to sell-off almost anything. Now, coming to the issue of sales of properties, having received about N500 billion fund from Federation Account, and lots of other resources coming to Ondo State via other channels, Ondo has no reason to borrow or sell off properties or assets, what I refer to as labour of our heroes past; what has taken the founding fathers of Ondo State to build for over 30 years, this government that has nothing to show on the ground for the huge amount of resources at its disposal has even gone ahead to deplete our reservoir of wealth, posterity will judge this government as one that has behaved like an army of occupation, who are leaving the occupant territory, carts away everything, including the cooking pots (the words of my party Chairman, Dr. Olaiya Oni). It is not only the oil blocs valued in the open market for 1 billion naira that these enemies of Ondo State want to sell at give away price of $39 million and you can be sure that they want to sell to themselves or their cronies. They have sold Ile-Oluji Cocoa Processing Limited, so also they have sold the Ondo State Liaison Office at Victoria Island, Lagos.
So, they have sold millions of shares belonging to Ondo State in Spring Bank and so many other assets including new vehicles and machinery which are being sold off as scraps and unserviceable vehicles. This looting is not only going on in Akure, it is being replicated in the 18 local government councils illegally being occupied by the Ondo State PDP.
The Commissioner for Information said the shares have not been sold.
Eddy Olafeso has even given the state government away on the issue of oil blocs, when he said talks are on-going with the prospective buyers, claiming that because of the global economic meltdown, it may be wise to sell off the oil blocs, a position that is as stupid as it sounds. Basic economics tells us that you don’t have to sell off a prized asset at a time like this when the value is coming down, you wait for the time when it is appreciating.
But because Agagu government is determined to ensure that the incoming government is frustrated from day one and because individually many of the officials of Agagu government have stacked away billon of naira of Ondo State resources in their personal account. They imagine they would have an easy ride and destabilising the new government using their enormous resources, they have stolen in the past 5 years.
There is this motion ex-parte by Federal High Court, Benin stopping the activities of the state government. What is the implication of this?
It is laughable when the state government begins to cry foul, each time, anything happens to hinder their plundering of Ondo State resources. The three gentlemen who went to Court were not registered members of LP, in any case, they never said they were representing LP. However, these gentlemen have the right to question the plunder of Ondo State resources by the Agagu government.
Agagu claimed to have improved water delivery from four per cent to 60 per cent in all its propaganda booklets. These he claimed to have achieved in five years before the Justice Garba Nabaruma’s judgment and the entire fund used to achieve this in five years is less than N5 billion put together. How come he has suddenly woken up after Nabaruma’s judgment that he needs to spend N15 billion to supply water to two local government areas out of 18? in any case, in Ondo State, I challenge anyone to visit our towns and villages to confirm if water is really flowing in our pubic taps to justify the propaganda and deceit of the Agagu’s administration. So, Olafeso and his cohorts can say whatever they like, the people of Ondo State are praying fervently that the express wish of the people of Ondo State put into action on April 14, 2007 and later confirmed by lower tribunal led by Justice Nabaruma will further be validated by the Appeal Court in Benin. So that the rightful owner of the peoples’ mandate would mount the saddle of leadership in Ondo State and deliver a true dividends of democracy to the people of the state.
What we have today is an illegitimate government denying the people of their common wealth. It is also pertinent to state that the procedure for award of contracts in Ondo State, even though appear on paper as proper, it is no secret that you can not get a contract except you are a crony or friend or relation of the governor or his brother, Femi (the Chief of Staff) and that is why we refer to their government as that of Agagu’s primordial family.
Also, there is speculation on planned violence between the two opposing parties. What is your view?
Even as the people of Ondo State eagerly await the pronouncement of the Appeal Court, in Benin City, we have reliable information that arms and ammunitions and strange faces, thugs and hired assassins are being imported into the state to wreak havoc in the event of the loss of PDP and Agagu at Benin to give the impression that the popular government has been unseated, with this report we implore the security agency not to take lightly some few days ago, the leadership of all political parties were invited to a formal parley with the Director of SSS according to Dr. Olaiya Oni who represented LP, only the PDP did not attend that peace meeting, that is a pointer that they did not want peace in Ondo State. However, I say to the people of the state that they have noting to fear because the good always triumph over evils and as the Bible says “righteousness exalts a nation” the people have stood by the truth for over two and half years they have remained resolute, stand by the mandate they gave to Dr. Mimiko on April 14, 2007 such that today it is people from the ruling party who are defecting in thousands to LP which is not in government yet, an unusual phenomenon in the Nigeria’s polity.

Agagu’s Thugs On The Expressway

Until recently, they had reigned supreme on the Benin bypass, unleashing terror, wrath and violence on hapless commuters. As vehicles negotiated the very dangerous bend to re-enter the Benin-Onitsha Expressway, they would suddenly jump unto the road from their hideouts like enraged demons and pounce on them with raised clubs and whips, pouring out loud, violent threats, capable of making some drivers lose control of their vehicles. They would also throw spiked sticks on the way of these vehicles, puncturing tyres and even causing accidents in the process. And since these were mainly casual workers, most of whom may have been recruited from the horde of red-eyed layabouts thronging some of the city’s most notorious dingy drinking and smoking joints, there were no limits to the violence and trauma they could unleash; and identifying and arresting them in the event of any fatalities could only prove difficult, because it was doubtful that those who had engaged and deployed them there would be willing to take responsibilities for their tragic excesses.
Once, I was detained by these rough, soulless fellows under the hot, merciless sun for more than an hour for not possessing ‘this emblem or that paper’ they were demanding and refusal to pay any bribe. It was an experience one would not wish even for one’s worst enemy. This had happened when Mr. Lucky Igbinedion was the Governor of Edo State. At some point, I made the horrible mistake of wondering aloud why Lucky would unleash these thugs on commuters on a Federal Highway to torment their lives. One of them heard me, and threatened to show me that “This is Benin!” if I did not watch my mouth. Another one let out the chilling warning that if he entered the bush and re-emerged in his true colours, we would “see pepper” that day. Well, thank God for His great mercies, we were eventually let off the hook to continue with our journey despite the refusal to pay any bribe. In fact, during the reign of these thugs on the Benin bypass, anytime I remembered I would be using that road, my heart would jump into my stomach. From what I have heard so far, so many other commuters had more horrible and excruciating experiences than I had. Some even never found any mouth or breath again to recount their own ordeal. Even when Igbinedion quit office and was replaced by Gov Osunbor, a professor of law, the thugs continued to remain there, unleashing violence and terror, with an even greater brazenness and gusto. It was therefore a great relief to Nigerians when Mr. Adams Oshiomhole replaced Osunbor as Governor and promptly disowned those bands of thugs that had tormented people at the Benin bypass, declaring their activities illegal. Since then, they have vanished from that spot, and like every user of that road would happily tell you now, one can ply that road without the fear and dread of those horrible thugs driving anyone crazy.
Now that the horrible nightmare has ended in Benin, another and even more dreaded one is playing out in Ondo, the state which boasts itself as the ‘Land of the Living Spring.’ The terror these fellows constitute to commuters on the Lagos-Ore-Benin expressway is better imagined. Pray, why would Gov Olusegun Agagu unleash these thugs on a Federal highway to make life hellish for travellers? Are there laws empowering states to extend their revenue drives into Federal roads? That the road is bad and horrible should be enough headache for Nigerians who use it daily. Why is government always eager to portray itself as public enemy? Why is Agagu compounding the trauma and pain of long-suffering Nigerians? Just before Ore, commuters from Lagos would suddenly encounter these thugs as they try to force them to stop by throwing spiked sticks on their way. These fellows, distinguished by their dirty green aprons, fierce miens, red eyes and long clubs do not understand what decent conduct is all about. They care less about life and safety. All they want is to stop speeding vehicles in the most violent and hazardous manner and demand from drivers what Gov Agagu’s officials had mandated them to. Sometimes, the ‘emblem’ or ‘licence’ they are demanding from drivers who may be based in Lagos or Sokoto may just be items unknown to anyone outside the particular local government or the state, and may even have their versions already paid by these people in the states where they reside; so won’t paying them in Ondo again amount to double taxation? But none of these arguments impresses Agagu’s fiery thugs on the expressway. Given the way they are operating, they may be pushing many drivers to kill themselves and those they are conveying daily without anyone doing anything about it. And many of the traumatized commuters could be foreign investors or tourists or journalists who had responded to our invitation to come to see how our nation had become such an investor and tourist-friendly one. The presence of countless police checkpoints on these highways is already enough trauma without Gov Agagu compounding the matter with these dreadful thugs. Somebody should please ask him to follow the decent example set by Mr. Oshiomhole in Benin and sack those thugs from the Lagos-Benin Expressway. It is also about time the National Assembly came out with appropriate, unambiguous laws restricting states from unleashing their revenue-collecting thugs on travellers on Federal highways.
The New Face of Port Harcourt
For a couple of days last week, I was in Port Harcourt, and the story of the countless commercial motorcycle operators, popularly known as okada, sacked from the Garden City by Gov Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi was the most dominant topic in town. My problem with Amaechi’s action is just the timing. In an interview published in this paper last Sunday, Amaechi appealed to Rivers people to exercise some patience, that very soon, he would flood the streets with buses. Now, why did he not exercise the same patience, and waited until he had brought out the buses before sacking the okadas from the streets? In Port Harcourt, people are going through the kind of suffering no one had imagined was possible in a city ruled by someone with a soul! My wife and I were shocked to see people trekking long distances to get home after the close of work, in fact from as far as Mile One or even ‘Lagos’ to places like Rumuokuta! It was that bad. And the few taxis are milking the people pale. The traffic situation in Port Harcourt has always been horrible, but has now worsened terribly due to what one senior lecturer described as the “work in perpetual progress” in the state – whereby construction work on roads seem interminable. By the way, on which roads will Amaechi put his buses? Most of Port Harcourt streets can at best be described as bush paths which may not be able to take two buses at a time, so where are the buses going to ply? Why not he start thinking of something like “Keke Rotimi” (tricycles) to replace the okadas whose ban, by the way, I support because of the many hideous uses they were being put to in Port Harcourt by criminals? Amaechi is promising to “completely rebuild” Port Harcourt. Yes, I support him, because most of what is known as Port Harcourt today is just a glorified slum. But he must operate with human feelings. After all, the people need to be alive to savour the beautiful city he is building.
I enjoy the posts above. What remains puzzling to me is the ideological sommersault of people like Eddy Olafeso, the current commissioner for information in Ondo state, who now goes by the title of “Olorogun”. Eddy was a former president of the Students’ Union of the University of Ife (now OAU) in the early eighties when student leaders were in the forefront of the war for egalitarian Nigerian society. Today, Eddy as a politician is a different man. He is now the man defending governments like that of Agagu that is oppressing hapless Ondo State citizens. How time and people changes. Ditto for John Ola Mafo, the Commissioner for Youth and Sports and also former commissioner for Information. Ola mafo was Secretary of Ondo State Students Union and later PRO SUG in Ife also in the eighties. I remembered vividly how Ola Mafo and other Ondo state students went to Akure in 1982 to distrupt the presentation of the Ondo state budget to the state assembly by Chief Ajasin because of the delay in the payment of bursary to Ondo state students in higher institutions. A lot of Ondo State government vehicles were hijacked and brought to Ife during the period. Today, the government that Eddy and John are serving in Ondo State does not give bursary to anybody, rather students in tertiary institutions are now paying fees and they have no qualms defending Agagu in the stealing of Ondo State resources. Ola Mafo is now the one justifying the need for building a stadium gulping billions of Naira as a priority in a state with staggering unemployment of youths. What a shame.
Eddy is indeed the “olori ogun (field marshal) of the people pillaging the resources of Ondo State. You guys are a disgrace to men of honor and integrity. Because of filthy lucre you forgot the principles and ideals that brought you to limelight. Go back and look yourself up in the mirror. You were no longer what you were in the eighties. What has happened to “practice what you preach”.The love of money has depersonalized you. I want all of you to know that at the appointed time your Daniel will come to judgement.

You touched a tense nerve in me when you reminded me that my Alma Meter junior at GreatIfe has become a disgrace in his dogmatic. sycophantic and mindless hero worship of his masterAgagu. Such a shame for true to your words, prior to becoming Commissioner for Information Eddy Olafeso was quite likeable. But this is why I so love our Yoruba adages. One says “ewure ti o ba ba aja rin, a je igbe” i.e a goat (normally expected to eat GRASS), that decides to associate with a dog, will start eating SHIT, FEACES. This is the case of Eddy Olafeso.
Well all these people can still be saved. All they need to do is let God touch their lives and repent of the evil acts and hard to do, they need to return the stolen goods and money that belong to Ondo state and with immediate effect, STOP LOOTING. they all need to GIVE PEACE A CHANCE. They must not allow thugs and vagabonds to stir the peace of Ondo State when the VERDICT OF TRUTH that we all know is announced in Ondo State.
Agagu has really buttered these people’s bread with stolen money and properties, now Agagu is their God. Unfortunately, wealth and temporal things are for a moment while Love Truth and Spiritual things are Permanent. Agagu is a gonner. Too far gone in his evil ways of looting, bribing, playing to the gallery with smooth words and punishing the innocent and poor people of Ondo State. O ma se o. What are people always ammassing ill begotten wealth for? They die like Abacha and the wealth perishes in foreign accounts or turn up in money storehouses at their homes. Bottom line is; they will not enjoy the money for long. They will not have a good end, their lineage will be accursed and they will never be remembered for good forever.
The blood of the slain will cry out
The pain of the wounded will scream out
The disgrace of the uneducated will rub on them
The face of the innocent will overcome them
The vagabonds they creat will tear them down
The sufferings of the homeless will haunt them
God who hates wickedness will totally wipe them out.
Peace my people
Justice will be served
Democracy will return to stay

@Olaniyi Ekundayo, wow you got me there. Actually Wole Soyinka was and is still one of my direct mentors. I was under his tutelage and discipline at Ife in the late Seventies. I will never abandon my disciplined upbringing. People call me Magaret Thatcher and I do not take offence. I know I am kind and fair and just and God will evaluate and rate me, not people. Yes Great Ife thought me well. I am glad I abandoned my Oxford College education (with the intent to enter Oxford University for a Law Course) and went straight to Ife. My father was mad at me but I was happy and God smiled, and here I am today not regretting anything.
By the grace of God, Ondo State leadership seats will be occupied by people of principle, integrity, dilligence and Godlines. For the sake of posterity we need to mass breed the extinct Polar bear. It must produce infants like a rabbit and then Nigeria + Ondo State go better.

Although I did not attend the reunion, I am in touch with colleagues here in the US and we are actually in the process of getting a 100-seater bus for the Medical School. The OAU Alumni Awards For Excellence in Medicine was actually given to a classmate of mine Dr. Olutoye, a pediatric surgeon in Texas. Ife will always remain GREAT.
God will continue to enlarge the coast of this great institution. He will answer our prayer and retrieve the stolen mandate of own great alumnus Dr. Mimiko for him from the hand of the usurper.

Ahead polls’ verdict, defence corps deploys 2,000 officers in Ondo

AS judgment day in the Appeal Court suit over the April 14, 2007, governorship election in Ondo State draws nearer, about 2,000 officers and men of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) have been deployed to the 18 local councils of the state to prevent a breakdown of law and order before and after the verdict.
The state Commandant of the NSCDC, Saphere Mimi Alhassan, who disclosed this at a media briefing in Akure, the state capital yesterday, said the corps personnel manned posts in the state and had mounted a 24-hour patrol surveillance in Akure metropolis.
Alhassan, however, warned politicians and their supporters against violence after the verdict of the Justice Umaru Abdullahi-led appeal panel, warning that any breach of peace by individuals or groups would be dealt with accordingly.
Besides, Alhassan said four NSCDC officers arrested in Akure during a fracas involving men of Ondo Police Command last Tuesday, have been released after the intervention of the state Police chief, Mr. Charles Dawodu and the Assistant Commandant, NSCDC, Hassan G. Daya,
But, according to Alhassan, before his men regained freedom, they were humiliated by the police.
He claimed that policemen attacked the NSCDC personnel when they went to invite one Gbenga Awodumila who lived in the same house with a police officer, Mr. Akpejunah Alagbabonimigha, over a complaint they received from Mrs. Temitope Asaolu.
His words: “When our men were about to invite Gbenga for questioning over an offence he committed, Mr. Akpejunah threatened them with cutlass, which our men struggled to recover from him”.
He said it was after Akpejunah identified himself as a policeman on his yearly leave from Anambra State that the handcuffs put on his hands were removed while Awodumila reported the case of assault on him and the policeman at Oda Police Station.
The commandant added that the NSCDC officers were challenged by the police at the police station, claiming that they did not have any right to arrest.

Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka in this encounter takes a swipe at the regime of President Yar’Adua and dismisses it as a government on sabbatical.
He describes OBJ/Atiku reconciliation as a marriage made in hell and a relationship that could finally

He goes further to say that kidnapping is not new in Nigeria and traces it to the period of the cement bonanza of the Murtala Muhammed era when kidnapped victims were drown with bags of cement around their necks when their families didn’t pay up.
He attributes the entire Nigeria situation to the fact that Nigeria is a failing state and is fast disappearing before the people and urges that the people who destroyed Nigeria, including former President Obasanjo and his party PDP be brought to trial for betraying Nigeria and her people. Excerpts:
The recent leave embarked upon by President Yar’Adua generated controversy because he did not officially brief the National Assembly about it and in turn the legislators would not accept Goodluck Jonathan as Acting President. Should things continue to be that way in Nigeria?
Really, I have not studied exactly what the Constitution said. But I think I have to now. These are little things in the Constitution that are not really clear but I would have to study them.
Okay, whatever the truth in the constitution, should there be a vacuum in government?
Having a vacuum in government is nothing new. From the very beginning, Yar’Adua’s government went on sabbatical. It’s nothing new.
Is it good for a country?
Even in a home, in a domestic setting, decisions are taken one way or the other. A family likes to know who is in charge, how to relate to authority. Who can do what? Who’s in charge of food, cooking, purchases? Everybody does something to make sure that the household is running. Well, the people of Nigeria are mature individuals and they should know those who are in charge even when nothing is said.
In other words , you think Nigerians don’t need to feel his absence?
You misunderstood me. The question you asked has to do with whether the National Assembly should reject anything that does not have Presidential signature. I’m now saying that yes, there is a point in that because even in a domestic situation, people in that house would like to know just who has the ultimate authority to take decisions.
That means that somebody has to be in charge at any given time…
I’m saying that the nation is a nation of very politically sophisticated people and they deserve to know yes, just who is in charge. I think this is clear enough.
There is the issue of Constitutional Review which is generating some bickering in the National Assembly. Sir do you think we need this Constitutional review and is this bickering between the two chambers of the legislative arm necessary?
The system we are running in this country is a disaster. It is too costly for our resources, for the kind of political intellectual manpower that is needed to run it. It is too demanding and according to the rules of the nations which we borrowed, the structure itself is flawed, dangerously flawed. So, you ask, do we need a Constitution review?
On one hand, I like to say yes. On the other hand, I’d like to remind you that people have different ideas to review. If you ask Nigerians, say twelve Nigerians what they understand by review, you will likely get twelve different points of view. The Constitution that we have is a fraud. We need a completely new Constitution.
The Constitution we have at the moment was imposed on us. It was not agreed upon in full freedom by free citizens of this nation. And so, we are in a situation where we are looking at the system that is not running. We continue to attempt to run it. So, we need a drastic review of the situation, an overhauling of the system that is not paying off and for which we are paying through the nose.
So, it is unnecessary for the two chambers of the national assembly to be bickering over the issue of
OBJ/Atiku reconciliation superiority and not getting the job done?
Like I said, the issue of superiority should not arise if the structure itself is not flawed. The structure itself is flawed from the very foundation of what we claim to be a nation.
The Power Sector in Nigeria has failed woefully and the President thinks, the country should resort to importation of generators so that carbon monoxide should be used as an alternative to electricity . Should that be the way out of the power problem in the country?
Those who were running this country when the system of generating power collapsed has a case to answer in the criminal court of justice of the people of this nation. It’s a sin. It’s a disgrace and former President Obasanjo should be tried for having betrayed this nation over the issue of power generation.
If you remember, after having disgraced the former Minister of Mines and Power, Bola Ige who set to sanitize the power generation and power delivery system of this nation, he (Obasanjo) pushed him out and afterwards sabotized his reforms.
And even after the man died, he had the nerve to tell this nation that he put somebody in charge who did not know his left from his right. He slandered a dead man! He then took over personally in a statement to the nation and said he was going to resolve the whole issue. Now, I’m asking you, did he?
Personally, I know how much I’m spending on Diesel. I know how often my two standby generators break down and what it costs me to repair them because they are no longer standby generators. They are the main generators while the so-called NEPA or whatever it is called has become a complete opposite.
It does not supply power. It is a complete nuisance. It is a disgrace and those who ran this country for so many years have a case to answer in the court of criminal justice.
Is the power problem it beyond repair?
Well, it is not. But as long as we have the kind of leadership that we have at the moment, we are going to continue to suffer.
The system break-down you talked about has become a global phenomenon. The so-called economic melt-down is taking its toll in all the countries of the world. In Nigeria, they told us initially that it would not affect us but now it is doing so even to the point that the Presidency is thinking of cutting down the remuneration of political appointees. The stock market has gone down and the devaluation of the naira has become the in-thing. There have been calls to sack the CBN Governor and really, one wonders how we will get out of it…
I hope that Nigerians are too intelligent to believe that the earlier ridiculous statement that the global economic melt-down would not affect Nigeria. You see, those who came to lead this nation have a way of beating their chests over nothing or boasting about situations that they know nothing about. I remember that statements were made that Nigeria would not be affected. We laughed where we were.
We said look at these clowns again, trying to lure the people of this country into a state of false security. And of course, we’ve being proved right and especially for a nation which depends on one solitary economic productive system, which was not even a productive system but one of just extracting from nature the resources of a nation.
So, how can such a nation be affected by what is happening in the rest of the world which also depends on that one single commodity? All those who made this kind of statement wherever they are, no matter the positions they held in public or private sectors should be tried for deliberately misleading the nation.
Some people are agitating for the sack of the CBN governor for devaluing the naira and for other economic woes befalling Nigeria?
I have never been in government and I will not make a comment for or against the sack of CBN governor. But anybody who thinks that the sack of the CBN governor will reverse things in Nigeria is living in a fool’s paradise.
I’m not saying they should or should not sack him. I’m not making comments on that. That is between Soludo and the government that employed him in the first place. What I find very annoying is the deceit Nigerians were subjected to on the matter of global economic melt-down.
The former Vice-President, Atiku Abubabar was in the news recently for having reconciled with his former boss, Olusegun Obasanjo. There are insinuations that he could be returning to his former party, the PDP. What do you think about that?
PDP as a party is a party of treachery and murder. I described PDP as a nest of killers and I uphold that position till today.
There are individuals within the PDP who have tried to reform that party. Some have given up and moved out to form their own party. It is my belief that the PDP is irredeemable. The PDP is in power but it is in power fraudulently. You and I know that.
The whole nation knows it. The whole world knows that the PDP was resoundingly rejected at the last election but was manipulated into power by the egomania of one desperate individual who still wanted to be controlling the affairs of this nation from the outside after he failed to enthrone himself through an unconstitutional third term agenda.
And he has not yet given up. So, what happens between individuals in PDP is of no interest to me except to say that this is one of the most obscene incidents of reconciliation that I ever encountered in all my years of existence. It’s an obscenity. It contradicts all laws of decency.

Please stop using that word reconciliation. Don’t try to give it an air of recovery. That word should not even come up.
You talked about the global economic recession and in Nigeria, apart from the stock value and naira free-fall, the price of fuel has come down. Do you think this will still affect us?
I have started stocking firewood in my house at Abeokuta and when the time comes and it would require my using firewood, I would revert to it. Those of you who are not ready, who think that it would not eventually come to that, be fooling yourselves there. Don’t delude yourselves that the price of fuel has come down. But I would advise Nigerians to start stocking firewood. Go and get your cooking pots down and be prepared for the worse of it.
That means the end is not yet in sight?
I have told you, I am ready to start cooking on firewood. What are you talking about? This is 2009, first decade of the 21st century and I cannot boast of an average of 30 minutes electric power in my house in Abeokuta, one of the first modernised cities in Nigeria and I cannot guarantee that I can have one hour of power supply per day in 2009! The firewood and cooking pots are ready.
There are insinuations that the reason why Atiku Abubakar reconciled with Obasanjo was to return to PDP and recontest Presidential election in 2011 under that platform as the situation of health of President Yar’Adua may not allow him a second term in office…?
I have told you earlier that anything that bears the mark of PDP signifies evil. I also want to remind people that there are individuals within that party who need to be encouraged to destroy the party from within.
PDP is the most violent affliction on this nation and there is nothing positive to be used to qualify it. It is violent, illegitimate, filled with bribery, extortion and so on. This party is the greatest affliction on Nigeria and it stands in the way of progress of this nation. The people who are still honourable who still belong to that party should come out and decide whether to form a new party or join with the progressives of this nation and destroy that affliction called PDP which has continued to ruin the future of this nation.
Now one last question, you know this issue of kidnapping started as part of the struggle for resource control in the Niger Delta and now, it is escalating to other parts of Nigeria, to places that have nothing to do with Niger Delta. Criminals just kidnap people and demand for ransom. Is there really no way this menace could be tackled?
I want to disagree with you that the issue of kidnapping began in Niger Delta or due to resource control. You are a young person and may not know some of the things that happened in the past. But I want to take you back to a period of the Cement bonanza.
The kidnapping-for-ransom syndrome began with the cement bonanza in this nation. I want you to go and read my play To Zia with Love and do so very carefully.
This book dealt with this problem and that book referred to a period in the life of this nation under the Murtala Muhammed.
People were being kidnapped for ransom and those whose family did not pay up were drowned with cement bags around their necks. Kidnapping began at that time. Sudden overnight millionaires emerged at that time who were cement merchants and cement amalgams.
At that period, there was an amalga of ships lined up even beyond our national waters, paying demurrage of millions of dollars and pounds Sterling as demurrage because they could not land.
And people profited from that by ordering shiploads of cement and even when they had nothing on those ships, all they need to do was come to this place and anchor beyond the borders and Nigerian government was forced to pay demurrage. Later, General Adekunle was brought in to clear everything up.
This began at the time of the regime of Murtala Muhammed and spilled over to the time of Obasanjo. So, it did not begin today. Some of the kinpins of that time even had albums in which they kept photographs of kidnapped people.
There are different gang leaders and if you were looking for somebody, they would direct you to them and they would bring out their albums and look through for the missing person. In those days, they used extermatic cameras.
They would check their albums for a victim photograph. If the photo is there and has been crossed, it meant the relations of the victim did not pay up and he had been drowned. If they didn’t have the person you were looking for, they would direct you to another gang .
If your relation has been drowned, they would even direct you to another group to know how your relation was buried and if you could still retrieve the corpse for a fee.
Many people didn’t know about this. I know about it intimately because I too had to go into the nation’s waters to help track down these gangsters.
So, General Benjamin Adekunle was the one who quelled it but obviously, for it to crop up again means it didn’t die down completely. It was at that period of cement bonanza that kidnapping people for ransom began and later, the Niger Delta region militants were to inculcate this despicable tradition.
This attitude is despicable and should be stopped. We of the black continent have a memory of enslavement and therefore we should not repeat history of our own enslavement by afflicting ourselves with this menace.
Other people are moving forward and we should not inhibit ourselves by enslaving ourselves after we suffered same centuries ago.
That means this government can still do something to stop?
I told you earlier, Yar’Adua’s government is on sabbatical. We are moving backwards. We are still depending on animalistic means of survival.
This is a shame of this nation. It is deplorable and Nigerians should desist from that. And it tells you that this country is failing as a nation. I said it earlier, Nigeria is a failed state. All these things you see happening are signs of a failing state. There is suspicion everywhere.
You don’t trust anybody in Nigeria, not even your next door neighbour. These are signs of a failed state. Nigeria is fading away right under our very eyes. It is very sad and unless something is done quickly to arrest this situation, Nigeria is gone.

I am happy to join with you today in what will go down in history as the greatest demonstration for freedom in the history of our nation.
Five score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow we stand today, signed the Emancipation Proclamation. This momentous decree came as a great beacon light of hope to millions of Negro slaves who had been seared in the flames of withering injustice. It came as a joyous daybreak to end the long night of their captivity.
But one hundred years later, the Negro still is not free. One hundred years later, the life of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination. One hundred years later, the Negro lives on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity. One hundred years later, the Negro is still languished in the corners of American society and finds himself an exile in his own land. And so we’ve come here today to dramatize a shameful condition.
In a sense we’ve come to our nation’s capital to cash a check. When the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, they were signing a promissory note to which every American was to fall heir. This note was a promise that all men, yes, black men as well as white men, would be guaranteed the “unalienable Rights” of “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” It is obvious today that America has defaulted on this promissory note, insofar as her citizens of color are concerned. Instead of honoring this sacred obligation, America has given the Negro people a bad check, a check which has come back marked “insufficient funds.”
But we refuse to believe that the bank of justice is bankrupt. We refuse to believe that there are insufficient funds in the great vaults of opportunity of this nation. And so, we’ve come to cash this check, a check that will give us upon demand the riches of freedom and the security of justice.
We have also come to this hallowed spot to remind America of the fierce urgency of Now. This is no time to engage in the luxury of cooling off or to take the tranquilizing drug of gradualism. Now is the time to make real the promises of democracy. Now is the time to rise from the dark and desolate valley of segregation to the sunlit path of racial justice. Now is the time to lift our nation from the quicksands of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood. Now is the time to make justice a reality for all of God’s children.
It would be fatal for the nation to overlook the urgency of the moment. This sweltering summer of the Negro’s legitimate discontent will not pass until there is an invigorating autumn of freedom and equality. Nineteen sixty-three is not an end, but a beginning. And those who hope that the Negro needed to blow off steam and will now be content will have a rude awakening if the nation returns to business as usual. And there will be neither rest nor tranquility in America until the Negro is granted his citizenship rights. The whirlwinds of revolt will continue to shake the foundations of our nation until the bright day of justice emerges.
But there is something that I must say to my people, who stand on the warm threshold which leads into the palace of justice: In the process of gaining our rightful place, we must not be guilty of wrongful deeds. Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred. We must forever conduct our struggle on the high plane of dignity and discipline. We must not allow our creative protest to degenerate into physical violence. Again and again, we must rise to the majestic heights of meeting physical force with soul force.
The marvelous new militancy which has engulfed the Negro community must not lead us to a distrust of all white people, for many of our white brothers, as evidenced by their presence here today, have come to realize that their destiny is tied up with our destiny. And they have come to realize that their freedom is inextricably bound to our freedom.
We cannot walk alone.
And as we walk, we must make the pledge that we shall always march ahead.
We cannot turn back.
There are those who are asking the devotees of civil rights, “When will you be satisfied?” We can never be satisfied as long as the Negro is the victim of the unspeakable horrors of police brutality. We can never be satisfied as long as our bodies, heavy with the fatigue of travel, cannot gain lodging in the motels of the highways and the hotels of the cities. We cannot be satisfied as long as the negro’s basic mobility is from a smaller ghetto to a larger one. We can never be satisfied as long as our children are stripped of their self-hood and robbed of their dignity by signs stating: “For Whites Only.” We cannot be satisfied as long as a Negro in Mississippi cannot vote and a Negro in New York believes he has nothing for which to vote. No, no, we are not satisfied, and we will not be satisfied until “justice rolls down like waters, and righteousness like a mighty stream.”¹
I am not unmindful that some of you have come here out of great trials and tribulations. Some of you have come fresh from narrow jail cells. And some of you have come from areas where your quest — quest for freedom left you battered by the storms of persecution and staggered by the winds of police brutality. You have been the veterans of creative suffering. Continue to work with the faith that unearned suffering is redemptive. Go back to Mississippi, go back to Alabama, go back to South Carolina, go back to Georgia, go back to Louisiana, go back to the slums and ghettos of our northern cities, knowing that somehow this situation can and will be changed.
Let us not wallow in the valley of despair, I say to you today, my friends.
And so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream.
I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.”
I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia, the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.
I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.
I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.
I have a dream today!
I have a dream that one day, down in Alabama, with its vicious racists, with its governor having his lips dripping with the words of “interposition” and “nullification” — one day right there in Alabama little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers.
I have a dream today!
I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, and every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plain, and the crooked places will be made straight; “and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed and all flesh shall see it together.”2
This is our hope, and this is the faith that I go back to the South with.
With this faith, we will be able to hew out of the mountain of despair a stone of hope. With this faith, we will be able to transform the jangling discords of our nation into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood. With this faith, we will be able to work together, to pray together, to struggle together, to go to jail together, to stand up for freedom together, knowing that we will be free one day.
And this will be the day — this will be the day when all of God’s children will be able to sing with new meaning:

And if America is to be a great nation, this must become true.
And so let freedom ring from the prodigious hilltops of New Hampshire.

Let freedom ring from the snow-capped Rockies of Colorado.
Let freedom ring from the curvaceous slopes of California.
But not only that:

Ondo Progressives group berates guber candidates 15/2/2009
Ondo State Progressives Coalition (PC), a body comprising all opposition partiesand groups, has dismissed the recent statement by the gubernatorial candidates of some opposition parties that defected to the PDP in 2007 as “the mendacity of a league of failed but greedy gubernatorial pawns in defence of the collapsed government of Olusegun Agagu on sundry issues.
“We see the desperation exhibited by these political turncoats and mercenaries in openly twisting issues and facts to suit their selfish interests, as proof that the Agagu government will stop at nothing to save its sinking ship for the benefit of the greedy parasites that have rendered Ondo numb under his wasteful regime”, the group stated.
In a release in Akure, signed by the group’s Director Media & Research, Bola Ilori, Chairman of PC, Niran Jogbodo and Chairman of Ondo State CNPP, Ayo Isijola, the coalition said the manner the failed gubernatorial candidates went about manipulating issues on Ondo State shows that greed could land one in an embarrassing slavery and when it does, truth is bound to suffer irreparable damage.
It advised “the political renegades” that have been recruited to honour the Agagu parody for their meal tickets to know that the interests of the long-suffering Ondo people would never be suppressed for their narrow and selfish interests.
“It is apparent that this league of political prostitutes was given a condition to put up the kind of silly defence they put for Agagu in their paid statement in exchange for the horrible mess of porridge that informed their political flirting.
“It is apparent that they decided to append their name to that bundle of convenient lies to satisfy the rumblings of their stomach for which they elected to pawn away their honour and devour the meat of treachery.
“We won’t be led to believe that these hirelings do not know that all they said in their so-called statement, probably scripted and paid for from the Ondo Government House was a mere hogwash and hollow recitations of Agagu’s tepid propaganda. We believe that the stirring of their stomachs must have led them into this misadventure.
The group opined the the governor’s decision to go to appeal after the universally-lauded and thorough judgment of the Ondo tribunal, was merely buying time to carry out “unholy and corrupt acts” such as the contract bazaar for which the EFCC stopped him on his tracks.
“He was not doing it because he believed that the world would accept he won an election where palm kernels, different world personages such as Mike Tyson and objects voted for him. In coming out with spurious stories of performance after he had been thrown out by the elections tribunals and he went of spending spree, the purveyors of these falsehood are taking Ondo people and indeed all Nigerians who know about the preening going on in Ondo under Agagu for fools.
“Because they must quell the rumblings of their stomach, these politicians of fortune are twisting issues and desperately engaging in a campaign of calumny against Dr Olusegun Mimiko. We want to assure them that they will fail in their desperate mission because the Ondo people do not need political sell-outs and infidels to tell them what their interests are.
“We want to warn Agagu and the prostituting politicians that flock around him for morsels of their daily bread that soon and very soon, they will have no further hiding place. The earlier they start preparing for life in political limbo, the better for them. The Ondo people who have been suffering the scorching heat of Agagu’s bad government since 2003 shall run rejoice. We want to let the six politicians of the stomach know that their commission will soon come to and end as the new Ondo will have no room for the kind of opportunistic move they made after betraying their respective parties’ trust. We want to let them know that the new Ondo under Dr Olusegun Mimiko will be made to work for the people of Ondo and not for a few greedy politicians and their hirelings.”

As the countdown to the Appeal Court judgment over the April 14, 2007 governorship election in Ondo state draws near, the Labour Party (LP) in Ondo state has urged the people to remain calm in the face of provocation by some disgruntled elements.
They party however commended them for their resilience, support and stoic defence of that which is just, in a clime where some notable men had been compromised.
In a statement signed by the state Publicity Secretary of the party, Pastor Ranti Akerele in Akure, the state capital yesterday, said “LP as a people- oriented political party we also use this opportunity to pledge our continued protection of the interests of the good people of Ondo State and the good values of truth, honesty, love, kindness and the good neighbourliness cherished by them.
He stressed that in due course, through the instrumentality of the Nigerian Constitution, the injustices of the past would have been corrected saying that the true dividends of democracy would be delivered to the people in the most efficient, effective and transparent manner by the party.
His worlds: “We therefore use this medium to appeal for calm and peace in all our cities, towns and villages. It is of utmost importance that nothing is done to breach the peace as we are aware of the wicked plans of some disgruntled politicians who are daily planning widespread violence expecting retaliatory responses that could force the declaration of a State of emergency in Ondo-State.
“We also seize this opportunity to praise the courage, professionalism and sense of purpose of the Nigerian Police, the State Security Service, the Nigerian Civil Defence Corps and other Security agencies for their commitment at ensuring peace for all in Ondo State. We ask them not to relent and we ask the people of the state to remain vigilant”, he added.
He therefore enjoined all the people of the state to pray fervently as they prepare for the celebration of light over darkness, truth over falsehood and good over evil in due course.
And so we wait with Godly patience for the light at the end of the tunnel we now see and it is very bright. God will take us out of the tunnel in some days time. Amen.
