Agagu/PDP to Bribe Election Tribunal
Agagu dismisses N1bn bribe claim. By SUNDAY KUDAISI, Daily Champion.
A pro-democracy group based in Ondo State, Campaign for Sustainable Democracy in Nigeria (CSDN) has raised an alarm over alleged plans by Governor Olusegun Agagu to bribe a five-man election petition tribunal with N1 billion.
But swiftly, Ondo State governor, Dr Agagu has denied the allegation describing it as ‘tissue of lies.” He spoke through his Chief of Staff, Chief Femi Agagu.
CSDN, in a release signed by Dotun Alao and Sunday Ebietomiye, chairman and secretary respectively, alleged that the plans to bribe the Justice G.M. Nabaruma Tribunal with N250 million each was allegedly taken last weekend at the caucus meeting of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at the Government House, Akure.
The Ondo State government is presently contending with how to tackle series of petitions pending before the tribunal as virtually all the political parties which contested the highly contentious April 14, 2007 gubernatorial and House of Assembly election in the State are challenging the victory of Dr Olusegun Agagu.
In raising the alarm, the group said that with defeat staring the Olusegun Agagu’s administration in the face, there is now a desperate move by the government to attempt to pervert justice by bribing the five judges with this hefty amount of money.
“We want to let the whole world know that plans have been concluded to pervert justice by the Ondo State government under Dr Agagu by giving a whopping N1billion to the members of the Election Petition Tribunal which has already commence sitting in the State. This dastardly plan by Agagu and his henchmen was hatched at a meeting inside the Government House last weekend and they are about to carry it out by using a highly respected judge whom they had contacted to link members of the tribunal.
“We know that Agagu is a desperate man who will stop at nothing to ensure that the daylight robbery he and his party carried out on April 14 and April 21elections in Ondo State is legitimized. “Hence the need to alert the people of this state on this latest move to subvert the people’s wish once and for all by resorting to underhand means. We are aware that members of the tribunal are people of high integrity who will not be swayed for whatever amount of money.
They are aware of the stern warnings of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Legbo Kutiji and other eminent jurists in the nation who have warned on the need for members of the Election Petition Tribunals to be above board.”
Specifically, CSDN commended the Ondo Election Petition Tribunal for a job well-done so far saying: “from the little they have done since they commenced sittings in Akure, the Justice Nabaruma Tribunal is, no doubt, made up of highly conscientious judges who are bent on doing a thorough and fair job. We can only pray that they will carry out their duties in this manner and dispense justice without fear or favour,” the release stated.
Efforts to reach Justice Nabaruma or any of the other four Justices proved abortive when our reporter went to the Court 2 venue of the Tribunal. The Secretary of the Tribunal, Mrs Rasheedat Rasheed too was not available.
However, an official of the Tribunal who spoke on condition of anonymity insisted that nobody can bribe members of the tribunal. “I can assure you that it is not possible for this tribunal to be bribed to subvert justice. It is just impossible. They are made up of people of exemplary integrity. We will do our job with the fear of God and give justice to all according to the petition before us,” the source disclosed.
Contacted, the Labour Party, one of the parties whose governorship candidate, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko is laying claim to victory at the April 14 poll stated that the PDP in its desperation to continue to hold unto the stolen mandate which the people of Ondo State gave to Dr Mimiko could do anything.
According to LP’s Director of Press, Mr Kolawole Olabisi: “They lost the election which they rigged in a brazen manner, like armed robbers, they robbed the people of Ondo State of their votes with guns.
“But on our part, we have no iota of doubt in our mind that we will get justice at the tribunal as we are sure that the judges on that tribunal are men of sterling integrity who cannot be bought over by Agagu’s tarnished dross.
Victory, which we were temporarily robbed of, will be given to us by the tribunal. We are sure of this and that is why we went before the tribunal in the first instance, ” Olabisi added.
Reacting further on allegation, the governor’s Chief of Staff said the government had no such intention.
He said why should we bribe the tribunal when we know that we have a good case before the tribunal that would validate our victory.
“If they are saying that, it means that is what the Labour Party wanted to do for the tribunal members. We have said it; they have no good case.
They are losers always”.

very serious allegation. hey this is nigeria and anything is possible in nigeria. The people of Ondo state needs to be sensitized to such developments but i hope and wish the CSDN come up with solid evidence to buttress their claims.the evidence can be publicised nationwide and used as a tool in ensuring transparency in the tribunal.
i still think the judges will rise above it and dispense justice accordingly based on the evidence presented which from the look of things is overwelmingly in favour of mimiko.
Chief Femi Agagu, chief of staff to Segun Agagu, I presume they are of the same famil. Hmmm. Anyway, I am not surprised at the bribery attempt. That is the only way of life that AGAGU knows. Labour Party candidate MIMIKO is not the type to stoop to corruption, if not AGAGU would have bought him over to stop the petition. By th grace of God, in spite of the odds, in spite of Nigerian bribery factor and in spite of the temptation for I billion naira is indeed hge, the Electoral tirbunal member will not compromise their integrity, their future and their eternity by allowing the devil to buy them over with the allocation money given to Ondo state for the development and welfare of the people. Agagu has stolen so much he has loads to throw around but this is Ondo State money. We know this.
It does beat me when I hear people in Agagu camp say they have a good case/or no case to answer. The whole world knows the truth. The only thing that the tribunal will validate is their demise for victory only belongs to the truly democratically ELECTED GOVERNOR OF ONDO STATE DR OLUSEGUN MIMIKO. It is only because we do not know the future like our God does. MIMIKO HAS THE MANDATE, MIMIKO HAS THE VICTORY FOR MIMIKO HAS GOD ON HIS SIDE AND ONDO STATE WILL NOT BE PUNISHED FOR FOUR YEARS OF SERVITUDE TO AGAGU THE LYING THIEVING CHEAT.
IS KALU TELLING US THE TRUTH?
I READ WITH GRAVE CONCERN THE ARTICLE IN TODAY’S TRIBUNE BY BIOLA AZEEZ UMUAHIA. THE ARTICLE ” I’LL TAKE OVER FROM YAR’ADUA IF……..KALU. SHOULD GIVE ANY PATRIOTIC NIGERIAN A SERIOUS CONCERN. THE FORMER GOVERNOR OF ABIA WAS QUOTED AS SAYING THAT HE DID NOT GO TO THE ELECTION TRIBUNAL TO PROTEST THE OUTCOME BECAUSE THE US GOVT. AND KATSINA EMIRATE COUNCIL HAD GIVEN HIM DIRECTION NOT TO DO SO. THIS STATEMENT IS VERY DISTURBING AND DEPICTS TO ME THAT THE ELECTIONS OUTCOME WAS ALREADY DETERMINED BY THE US GOVERNMENT AND KATSINA EMIRATE COUNCIL LONG BEFORE THE ELECTIONS WERE CONDUCTED. THIS CONCLUSION CAN SAFELY BE INFERRED. I HOPE AND PRAY THAT OBASANJO HAS NOT MORTGAGED THE SOVEREIGNITY OF THE NIGERIAN STATE TO A FOREIGN GOVT AS KALU’S CLAIM MADE MANY CONCERNED NIGERIANS TO BELIEVE.
SECONDLY, I ALSO READ WITH INTEREST THAT THE ICPC IS GOING TO PROSECUTE SOME FORMER STATE GOVERNORS. AGAGU, SHOULD UNDOUBTEDLY BE ONE OF THEM. THE PEOPLE’S CHOICE, SEGUN MIMIKO CAN THEN ASSUME HIS GOVERNORSHIP OFFICE AS ORDAINED BY GOD AND VOTED BY THE PEOPLE OF ONDO STATE BEFORE OBASANJO AND AGAGU STOLE THE MANDATE.
WHERE IS THE SEPARATION OF POWERS IN OUR DEMOCRACY?

FIRST AND FOREMOST IT IS NOT THE DUTY AND RESPONSIBILITY OF THE EFCC TO ARREST ANYBODY. EFCC’S FINDINGS UNDER NORMAL CIRCUMSTANCE SHOULD BE SUBMITTED TO THE OFFICE OF THE ATTORNEY GENERAL WHO IS THE PUBLIC PROSECUTOR. THE ATTORNEY GENERAL’S OFFICE WILL ARRANGE TO HAVE ALL ACCUSED PERSONS ARRESTED AND ARRAIGN BEFORE THE LAW COURTS.
IT IS ALSO NOT THE DUTY OF THE PRESIDENT TO OBSTRUCT JUSTICE. THE PRESIDENT’S JOB IS TO UPHOLD, DEFEND, PROTECT AND RESPECT THE CONSTITUTION. PROTECTING CRIMINALS OR ACCUSED PERSONS FROM BEING ARRESTED AND PROSECUTED FOR WHATEVER REASON IS AN UNPARDONABLE MISTAKE AND MUST THEREFORE BE CONDEMNED BY ALL AND SUNDRY. ALTHOUGH THE PRESIDENT HAS THE POWER TO PARDON, BUT HE CANNOT STOP OR HINDER OTHER ARMS OF GOVERNMENT FROM CARRYING OUT THEIR CONSTITUTINAL DUTIES OR FUNCTIONS. IT IS ALSO A SIGN OF WEAKNESS FOR THE PRESIDENT OF A SOVEREIGN STATE TO LACK INDEPENDENCE IN DECISION MAKING IN MATTERS THAT AFFFECT THE DOMESTIC AFFAIRS OF THE NATION. WHY IS MR PESIDENT-ELECT’S DECISION BASED ON WHAT THE USA IS THINKING. USA DECISIONS ARE NOT BASED ON WHAT YOU, THE UN, OR SOMEBODY ELSE THINK OR SAY. THAT IS THE SIGN OF A STRONG NATION OR LEADERSHIP. YOU NEED TO LISTEN TO THE CRY AT HOME BY YOUR SUBJECTS AND ALLOW THAT TO FORM THE BASIS OF YOUR DECISION MAKING PROCESS OTHERWISE YOU WILL BE CARING FOR FOREIGNERS RATHER THAN YOUR OWN PEOPLE.

Uba’s Sack: OBJ, Yar’Adua On the Warpath

THRERE is now a wide gulf between President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and his predecessor, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, following the implementation of the Supreme Court judgment that reinstated Governor Peter Obi of Anambra State.
Saturday Tribune sources in the Presidency revealed that what started as a cold war between the two leaders since power changed hands between them on May 29 has been blown open among the top hierarchy of the party.
It was revealed that the former president felt betrayed with the prompt restoration of Obi even before he offered his position on the matter.
ST was told that immediately the judgment was delivered, Obasanjo called the PDP National Chairman, Dr. Ahmadu Ali, asking him to tell Yar’Adua to call a meeting of the National Executive Council (NEC) of the party with a view to stopping the implementation of the ruling.
He was also reported to have told Ali to ask the President to call him on the matter, arguing that the Supreme Court should not have ruled that Dr. Andy Uba was not elected in the first instance.
On his part, Ali was said to have advised Obasanjo to call Yar’Adua himself, a suggestion which Obasanjo declined.
Obasanjo told Ali that Yar’Adua had changed of late in his approach to him and that communication between them had become one way as he was always the one calling the President.
After the discussion, Ali reportedly met with Yar’Adua and explained what transpired during the telephone discussion between him and the former president.
But the President, rather than call Obasanjo as requested, opted to direct the Inspector General of Police and the Solicitor General of the Federation to implement the court order without delay.
Angered by the attitude of Yar’Adua, Obasanjo reportedly made up his mind not to attend the ministerial screening meeting scheduled for Abuja two days after the judgment.
But he did not inform Yar’Adua who sent a presidential jet to convey him to Abuja for the meeting.
Obasanjo on his part had scheduled an overseas trip to avoid attending the Abuja meeting.
The crew that went to fetch Obasanjo got to his Ota farm to discover he had travelled.
Since Yar’Adua came on board, he has taken some steps considered not palatable to his former boss.
The appointment of Ambassador Baba Gana Kingibe as the Secretary to the Government of the Federation was said to be the first step taken by Yar’Adua that Obasanjo disliked.
Agagu will never have peace until restitution is made and restored stolen mandate to the rightful owner of the mandate. hear what desperace has lead him to. Still he still using the police to intimidate opponent.

Police disrupt AC meeting in Ondo

Men of Ondo State Police Command on Monday invaded the residence of Otunba Johnson Fasawe in Owo town and disrupted a meeting of the Action Congress (AC) holding in the place.
Narrating their ordeal in the hands of the police, the chief convener of the meeting, Dr. Akerele Adu, displayed one of the walkie-talkie forgotten by the police at the venue of the operation, adding that the men were overzealous.
Adu said that the police team led by the Assistant Commissioner in charge of Operation, Michael Bodunde and the Officer in Charge of Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB), whose name he could not remember, came in two Peugeot 504 Saloon cars marked ONDO AA157 SUA and NPF 5082B when the meeting was about to start.
He stressed that apart from the two cars that were parked in front of Fasawe’s gate, two lorry load of anti-riot policemen were stationed at the junction leading to the venue of he meeting.
Dr. Adu said the men left after the elders had explained to them that the meting was a private one, inside a private apartment of a chieftain, which should not attract any need for police permit.
The party chieftain said though the policemen left without arresting anybody, those who gathered for the meeting left hurriedly for fear of being arrested.
The meeting, according to Adu, was convened to review the performance of the party in the last general election and to chart a new way forward.
He said the elders of the party were disturbed by the frosty relationship between the chairman of the party, Comrade Sola Iji and Hon Ademola Adegoroye, who had pitched his tent with Governor Olusegun Agagu.
Adu said the elders of the party were reaching out to all members to resolve the differences among them. The Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Aremu Adeniran, when contacted over the incident, said that the story was not true, adding that the story was just an imaginary method cooked up by the party chieftains to discredit the police.
It’s not a hidden fact that PDP meant no good for the State. This has been proven several times and on many counts. The allegation of attempt to pervert justice is not suprising, it is an antics well suited to their colors.
But not worry, the good Lord will rescue us from their clutches and put the right one there. I know our hope on the ‘governor in-waiting’ will not be misplaced. So, let’s continue to pray.
